Realistic Combat Reactions

Post » Fri Apr 02, 2010 7:12 pm

So i noticed in the skyrim gameplay video, the scene where the dragur gets smacked in the head with an axe, his head and neck snaps back. So i already know there making combat way more realistic than oblivion was, but what i want to see is, for example, if you shoot an enemy in the leg with an arrow, he reacts to it realisticly, and slows down in movement, limps, falls to one knee for a sec, ect, or if you shoot him in the arm, mabye a chance to disarm him, or weaken/slow his swings.

In oblivion, you could shoot a dude in the neck, and he would run at you in full speed, swinging like a goon, the only thing that could stop him, was to simply kill him. If i shoot someone in the neck, i want to see him coughing up blood, choking, and fall over dead. Same with headshots, In oblivion, you couldnt inflict a headshot unless it was a killing blow, and i know todd mentioned bows and arrows will have a significant increase in power, so hopefully, i can headshot people, and one shot them, regardless if im in sneak mode for that x6 damage, or standing right in front of him for that point blank shot.

O and stealth all the way baby, woooooh! mad pumped for this game!!

I don't think they're incorporating location based damage.

Is there any proof of this? They said melee would be more tactical and realistic, mabye hitting someone in a certain location can trigger, or increase the chance of a critical strike, which would be location based damage.

I don't think they've given us any information either way on locational damage. It'd make for much more interesting combat for sure.

Aye, I would like to see location based damage. In theory, it isn't that difficult to code certain reactions and animations based on where a shot/jab hits. And with Radiant AI, this kind of thing should be a total breeze.

tie between stealth and physical combat . there are few things more satisfying than planting an arrow into an unsuspecting enemies skull, eyes ,throat, lungs or heart and watching them fall down like a sack of potatoes or even snapping a foes neck or spine with a simple thrust of the fingertips. yet being the savage barbarian ripping through foe after foe like a wild animal has a certain charm.

Personally I love the combat role, though I sort of play the game "realistically" in this sense: if I believe the situation is best served by subterfuge or stealth, I'll use it. I use straight up combat 90 percent of the time, but I love to sneak around, pick off some stragglers and men on the edge of the area to thin out their numbers

I hope they do have some form of locational damage, even if it's just for bows and arrows (and possibly spells, fireball to the face could be pretty bad). In Oblivion it was very unrealistic to shoot an enemy in the head and have them still charging at me (and yes I always aimed for the head, why? because it was darn fun to see the arrow sticking out of their eye socket). However it was equally ridiculous, if not more so to have enemies keel over dead after being hit in the arm.
Now I believe they are still toying with the idea of dismemberment right? well I hope it makes it in, because it would probably include some for of locational damage (you slash someone on their arm with an axe, their arm gets chopped off)

If someone got their throat punctured, they wouldn't be coughing.

Location based damage with location based defense depending on armor (not) worn would be nice.

You know whats one thing I think would be a really cool, small addition? If you stab someone in the back, they don't scream, or sharply inhale, but they suddenly exhale. I remember Christopher Lee of Saurumon fame was being directed by Peter Jackson to breathe in when stabbed, he went on to describe in detail to Jackson how when someone is stabbed in the back, that forces all of the air out of their lungs with the power behind the blade. Lee used to be a member of the OSS, essentially the English commando forces during WWII...so yeah, they listened to Lee lol

I agree, the little things like that can add greatly to immersion, plus stealth is so fun when you can pull it off.

At first i thought this was a horrendous idea but then i realized it would make armor protectng you realstic also and helmets actually useful.

Seeing as the imperial guards where half helms it would be some what of a problem to shoot through the helmet but if we had locational damage a shot at the helmet it would do close to nothing but if we aimed inbetween the plates it should do considerably more damage, making marksmen less of a ZARG SPAM ARROW SPAM ZARGGGGG SPAM SPAM 30 arrows into someones bare skin it would be aim hold concentrate 2 or so arrows at bare skin to kill and considerably more to kill if you aim at the persons armor for some odd reason

I rarely even USE stealth, but when I do, stuff like that would make it all the sweeter

My favorite combat roll is a natural 20. :D

@Kallus: Yes, he did say "goon." It's another word for "thug," or possibly just "stupid person."
