Way more fun that I thought it would be, but one question

Post » Sat Apr 10, 2010 2:57 pm

Man, I'm loving the gambling in this game. I've never played blackjack, roulette or slots, but I'm learning how they work and having a blast. Only problem so far is that I've lost about 300 caps. I'm curious if anyone knows what type of engine that Obsidian used to make these mini-games. My only concern is that, and this may be hard for me to articulate, is that since this is a game within a game (gambling in a video game) that it is somehow manipulated by the computer or scripted by the CPU. In other words, what I'm curious about is, are there other factors that affect whether or not you get a good hand in card games, a good bounce in roulette, etc.? It would seem that luck, which has been in every Fallout game would play a significantly vital role in gambling, but who knows? I'd be interested to see what the developers said in response to this aspect of the game. It is obvious that they spent some time developing these different types of games, but before I get more into it I would just like to know that the CPU isn't going to "cheat" me just to make the game play out how it wants too.

Also, are there any tricks to winning these games? I remember in Red Dead Redemption you could cheat (by holding an extra card 'under the table') when playing poker. You could switch out your extra card whenever you wanted to, but risked being caught. It was pretty cool and I won a ton of money by cheating (within the confines of the "video" game).

I hope this post makes sense, again its hard to explain what I mean when I'm talking about questions about a game within a game.

I cant say about how the games are scripted. But I do know you have to view the dealers visable card and make a guess to what he might have and then you deside if you want to take the risk to hit or stay.

Personally once you start getting around 15 and 18 you should really start considering to stay instead of hit. All it would take is a 6 with 15 to make 21 but now if you get a 7 or higher card you just lost. With 18 you have even smaller numbers you are shooting for which is 3 or less. Anything over 3 and you're over 21 and bust again.

On the roulette I cant say I never really done that in real life to know any tactics to try. I did try it in game but lost more money than it was worth.

Slots they are ok but its all random luck on pulling the handle and praying that you will get the right icons lined up to win.

I prefer black jack in the end but even then its hard to make money gambling and even the devs said that it would be. I cant recall if luck plays a part in winning or not but I would think it does.

Im interested myself if luck factors in, I think I might have saw something in an interview how luck "literally pays off now" or something like that idk

Anyway one tip I learned, if you have the caps ALWAYS double down on 11, thats when you are statistically highest to hit 21 (though I guess we arent sure how random it truly is)

edit: and no you cant cheat, would be cool to have some mechanic, or a lucky rabbits foot or something :)

If I recall luck is a factor in blackjack (I did notice a small difference when raising luck from 6 to 7), but I'm not sure about the slots or roulette.

Don't gamble. It makes your brain rot.

Really got the hang of blackjack, but after 2-3 hours I have to say, with luck at 5 I truly do feel like the computer screws you over pretty good.

Why gamble when you can play Caravan?

Sure it's confusing to learn at first, but once you get it down, you'll be earning caps right and left. I've managed to earn over 2000 caps in one sitting.

I think I actually want to play the game with my friends in RL now. :nerd:

Unfortunately, there is not. :sadvaultboy:

I hope to see it in a DLC, but something tells me that may not be happening.

Texas hold em would be perfect, I like how you increase or decrease betting/aggressiveness turn by turn a couple times before the hand ends in that game, but more npc players would need to be added to the table

otherwise me and the dealer could always just play speed

which is really just solitaire...

Luck plays a huge factor. With my luck at 7 and a decent amount of skill in blackjack I was able to run the table for a while till I got bored.

I've got luck at 7 as well, and I think the Atomic Wrangler knew it too after I won around 5200 chips... so they banned me from playing.

caravan confused the ruddy hell out of me at first! what i was seeing on screen didn't seem to align at all with the note that Ringo guy gave me explaining the rules, i thought it was bugged! eventually i got the hang of it and i think it would be a pretty cool game to pay IRL. shame about the lack of texas hold 'em, but enough games have that in them already, it's cool that they went to the effort of devising a whole new game entirely.

You can get permanently banned from casinos? That's lame.
