Damaged Equipment

Post » Wed Apr 14, 2010 2:13 pm

Considering many of their other games have had it, it's safe to say Skyrim will have health/durability for its weapons and armor, right? What would be cool is if it had equipment that showed visible signs of damage. Scratches, dents and on the extreme side, armor would get large gashes or tears and weapons would break and shatter. I don't really know how difficult this would be, I guess the piece of equipment would need multiple meshes. Unless they made 'dynamic' equipment, if that even possible.

Of course armor getting shredded and weapons shattering would only happen when the item hits 0 health. People who played Dark Cloud know how in that game when you ran out of WHP your weapon would break and vanish, likely leading to a swear from the player. The second one fixed this by making the weapon unusable until repaired. But really when armor or the weapon hit 0 they should break, forcing you to find or buy a replacement.

Would this svck if you're in the middle of a raider camp or fighting a dragon? yes. But it would certainly add more challenge and realism to the game. You'd have to really pay attention to and take care of your equipment to avoid finding yourself in a bad situation, perhaps even carry some backups. This could happen to enemies as well, though it'd be less likely since they only have to use their equipment for the one fight against you while you have to use them in a lot more battles. Disintegrate weapon and armor spells(if their in) would look alot more dramatic when they cause equipment to fall to pieces rather than be dropped or unequipped by the target.

Perhaps magic or enchanted equipment wouldn't fall apart because the magical energies keep the item from breaking completely. Imagine fighting an enemy when on the next strike your weapon snaps in two. Maybe a perk in the game could allow you to plunge the remainder of the weapon into the foe for a final attack with that weapon. I'd like to know everyone's opinion on a feature like this.

Didn't we have this thread yesterday?

My vote is still no to destroyed weapons.

i agree this sounds like a good idea...
especially with the new gui where you get a 3d rendering of each item so you could examine each one.

Meh, I honestly don't really care. Is it a vital aspect that must be added into the game now for my "immershun"?
No.

Does it take up a lot of programming time to add different types of damaged weapon models for every single weapon?
Probably yes.

So I say no. However, if it can be added with no problems whatsoever and my weapon won't disappear forever...Then fine, add it.

Something like this should only be in a hardcoe mode.

I dont want to get the rarest item in game only for it brake and disappear.

Well I did say perhaps magical equipment wouldn't break. If you mean like deadric equipment then unless theirs only one copy of each then even they should break. The point is to watch the item and repair it before it breaks.

http://www.elderscrolls.com/skyrim/media/screenshots/orc-night/ may show that items show signs of wear. I mean what, this armor type always looks scratched up?

Probably yeah, making different versions of each armour and weapon to show damage sounds like an awful lot of work. I don't think the designers would put so much effort towards something like that. It's much more likely that armour type always looks like that. I could be wrong of course.

Why would they need a whole new model?

They can paint models on the fly these days cant they? I remember seeing marks in the wall from bullets in some shooter i played.

Yes I want it to have visible signs on weapons and armor. Would be so cool.

But I think it is too late by now.

Two ways do show damage, shader effect like blood in Oblivion or a decal. Should not be to much work and should be possible to show steps in condition.

However I don’t like the broken = disappear, first it’s annoying, secondly that lots of items can break but be repairable in real world. A bow with a broken string would not be useable but easy to repair. Same with armor with destroyed buckles or straps.

Daggerfall had a fun twist, if your magic sword break it was not only destroyed but the daedra you soultrapped would appear next to you.

One idea might be to use fallout 3 repair system for armor. Not weapon as you don’t repair sword by taking part of one sword and add to the other :) but for armor this makes sense.

Yeah, this sound like something that should be added to the next gen console rather than the current ones since it would also take quite a lot of disc space(unless I'm completely confused).

Doesn't really make sense for a weapon to break and then be completely gone. If a sword breaks, then technically you could keep the two halves of the blade and then get it repaired. A smith would easily be able to connect the two halves again. The shards of Narsil for instance...

I would have issues with this. But that's somewhat affected by the experience I had in my last playthrough.... I had some Light shield (steel? mithril?), and in the process of going through a dungeon with some pretty strong enemies (I forget what... trolls? high-end zombies?), I had my shield smacked down to 0 durability roughly every 2 enemies. Probably had to fully repair the thing over a dozen times.

(Then there's the fact that I'm a collector and an appearance nut - if I spend the time finding a nifty armor or weapon, and then enchanting it/etc, I don't want it to be taken from me. Whether via breakage, theft from my home, "all your gear is lost forever" quest stages, etc.)
