Facial Editor

Post » Tue May 04, 2010 9:34 am

I am hoping that the facial editor will be superior to Oblivions, in the sense that you can make humans not so race-oriented.

Whenever I make a Nord character, for example. They look pale and brutish.

Sure, maybe thats how LORE describes them. But I always try to make them look a bit more like imperials. Because Imperials look the most human to me.

In morrowind however... every race looks ugly except dark elves XD

I agree, im hoping they make some changes to the facial editor too, it was not that great in Oblivion because you really couldnt go into detail at all. Im sure it will be better in Skyrim though.

But that's the point of races; they're supposed to look distinctively different from one another.

Then again, it is your opinion, and I'm sure the races will look a lot better this time around, so you won't be so turned off by how a Nord originally looks.

However, I think pale and brute > small and tan :o

The character creation is supposed to be much better this time around.
If it is really a huge deal to you, play on PC and mod! You can make a character look incredible on PC!

No offense to modders, but it isn't my intention to mod away the integrity of the game :P

Not to mention, I bought Oblivion for the PC. Only to find out that my graphics card is the 'saddest excuse for a graphics card intel ever made'

and cannot run Oblivion

I hope that I can change age again like in Oblivion, just for the extra customisation.

Yeah, the races SHOULD look different to eachother. It's the whole point of them, imo. But, to be honest, it doesn't bother me as long as the NPC's don't all look alike.

But in Oblivion, I could quite drastically change the facial features of a race. I remember once creating a white Redguard. I managed to hide the "Black" features, and he looked like a normal standard white human race.

I would actually like to see some kind of fusion between Morrowind and Oblivion's system. I'd like to have a Morrowind esque face selection system, coupled with a more in depth editor, ala Oblivion, after the initial selection. I would like something half decent to start my editations on, please. And the randomisations in Oblivion...

How does modding ruin the integrity of the game? In case you have not heard, Bethesda is using a lot of mods as inspiration for Skyrim. Archery will be like Duke Patricks Archery mod, as in, more realistic and way better than Oblivion, you should thank him for that :P

On topic: All of the races we've seen so far look great, so I don't think you'll do a lot of drastic changes to their facial structure like you had to in Oblivion at the start.

i read/watched some where that they are giving us pre-made facial pieces (cheeks, nose, mouth, etc) like in dragon age origins, you can then tweak them like length, width, etc. i think this will give you better control with character creation.

The devs said that they would be making the character modification tools more in-depth. I think with more customization you have, the more immersion grows.

That's not to say that I want to spend three hours building my initial character, but at the same time for immersions sake I wouldn't mind taking the extra minutes to get my character exactly the way I want him to look.

I think that as long as the character creation programming is more in-depth than Oblivion or Morrowind, I will be a morbidly happy Goth... lmao

I just hope that when you edit the preset characters that the sliders differentiate enough to actually make them look different. For some reason when I played fallout I would make sure to change every slider and it still looked like the original preset face :\

Yes, unfortunately the only thing that appeared flexible in the characters creation in oblivion was your characters face.. I personally never dared step out the set template's (ie, didn't tweak every feature) for fear my guy would end up looking like the elephant man. So, on a whole it be improved, yeah. It does seem to be problem in almost every rpg Ive come across, though, and its really disheartening when you see multiple npc's in game that look exactly like you.

Character creation, face-wise, sounds a lot like Mass Effect. You choose types of features (lips, nose, eyes, ears, etc.) and make minor adjustments to them such as size and placement. But on top of that there are scars, tattoos and other decals, heterochromic eyes, etc. Plus you alter your character's height, weight, and build on top of all that. Sounds like Saints Row or APB, to be honest, and I'm perfectly fine with that.

I'd prefer something like Fallout 3. I just select preset face #2, add a goatee and I'm good to go. Playing in first person, it doesn't matter to me what I look like, especially when I have my head covered by some helmet.

I am really expecting a magnificent character creation system. Morrowind's was a bit bland, but it fit the game. Oblivion's was a set up, and was amazing, and in my opinion, still beats 99% of all character creation systems out there. For example: Dragon age, and Mass Effect 2 both gave you the option to mess with the structure of your face a bit, but it was limited, and all o fthe characters in the game ended up looking like brother and sister in some way, shape, or form. In Oblivion, you could alter so many different aspects of just 1 portion of your face, such as the nose. And what i loved even more, is that it let you blow the facial structures waaay out of proportion, just for the fun, so you can get taht right look. You could make your nose extremely long, or your brow-line really droop, and really have a more ideal character. I mean, being kept realistic is realistic, but it subtracts from the amount of creativity that the player is given. Character creation is one of my favorite aspects of the Elder Scrolls Series, and of every other game, and I can really applaud a well-done character creation system.

I didn't have a HUGE problem with Oblivion's character creator, I just wish that if you tried to change one aspect of your character's face, then it affected everything else...which, I mean was alright...I guess. I think that they tried to make it too flexible with too many options so as a result, some of the choices on how you wanted your player to look just ended up canceling themselves out.

It's going to be pre-selected parts this time. As long as there are a whole lot of parts I'm fine with it. No more balloon head with bright pink hair! Sad face.

The problem I had with the Oblivion facial editor was the body and the head would be different colours. Also I would like to create in neutral lighting because the character always look a little different once you go out of the sewers and into the outside world. Not really a huge deal though I didn't see my character's face very often .
