Canteen question

Post » Tue May 11, 2010 11:07 pm

I know the canteen gives you water. I see up in the left corner, the message "you have taken a drink..." or something like that, so I take it, my character took a sip from the canteen so the dehydration meter doesn't go up. So my question is, when do we know if the canteen is empty? I thought a meter like how weapons or armour have a condition meter or health meter, the canteen would have a full/empty meter as well, this way we know how much we have and see if we can travel far or not.

After playing, I haven't seen the message "you have taken a drink..." so I got use to not seeing it, the after a while I noticed my dehydration meter up. So I drank water and my health got replentished and my deydration went to zero. I guess this fills up the canteen as well since I have been seeing the message every 5 or 10 minutes or so. Not keep track so not shure what the intervales are.

So since I don't think it's in the game, (if it is, please let me know), do you think this can be "patched" in, or can it be in a DLC then? I am on the 360, so if it is modded, it doesn't do me any good.

So what do you guys think. Should we have an indicator to see how much water we have in our canteens or other containers if we have any of those. (I haven't seen any yet so not shure if we do.)

If it's the preorder canteen I've heard 2 different stories, one is it never runs out. The other is it's a refillable reskin. I'm only 90 mins in myself and in the middle of a reinstall so can't answer your question...

Yes I have the one that came with the pre-order, but if it never runs out, that would mean you never get de-hydrated then. So if it never runs out, how does it work now? I am even more confused, how de-hydration system works then.

Another http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1123358-filling-up-bottles/ has already caused some confusion. Could some one please please clear this up once and for all?

It is just an option for people who preorder to use it or not if it effects de-hydrationn system too much I would not bother using the thing .

From what I can tell (only a few hours in) it does need refilling. If you go too long without getting a drink it stops working and you stop getting the message. Once you get a drink you'll start getting the messages again. Unfortunately there is no way to see what's left in it.

You can't see how full your canteen is? That's ridiculously stupid. There should be a number based ration. Say it's half full, it would say 50/100, or 5/10, or 1/2. So you would know how full it was.

Is it possible that it just keeps the meter rom going down (for a while). This is a guess, because I'm in Europe and don't have the game. :(

I think the rates vary depending on survival skill. I'd bet your money on it.

not a bad theory, but I'd still like to see the rates on it. >.> wondering if i shoulda tagged survival instead of science >.> oh well! can always pick up the perk to tag it later.

The rate is pretty slow, I've forgotten to eat and drink and sleep already running across the map and it doesn't build up too fast, considering how some foods knock off 150+ Food need... purified water knocks off 95 Water and sleep is like every 4 in-game days or something. I just take a 1-hour power nap at random places when I find them, and sleep can also be brought down by like nuka cola, and then the nuka cola bring your thirst up, so you drink water, a very balance game, but it's a cool addition to the game for sure.

The healing....

This is the bread and butter of hardcoe mode, stimpacks healing over time is brutally awesome, needing "hydra" or "doctor's bags" to heal crippled limbs has left me in the middle of the desert with a concussion more than once, I'm low on stimpacks almost always and Rad-Away is FAR LESS common, if you find a doctor/trader clean them out of medical supplies.

This is my opinion playing on Very Hard/hardcoe.

I've gone into the scripts for the canteen. There is absolutely nothing in those scripts to make it so that the canteen ever stops working - every five minutes (300 seconds) the script activates and you take a sip of water, healing you by 15 points and removing 25 dehydration. It has no end - it's like a font of infinite water.

All of this is why I made a mod so that you do, in fact, need to drink from a water source in order to fill up your canteen (it also removes the healing effect of water, since that's silly).

That is pretty ridiculous. It removes the entire need to find water in hardcoe mode. Ill certainly be modding the Canteens ASAP.

I have the canteen, if you do n't ever drink you WILL get dehyrdation.

It only slows down the pace of accumulating the need for water, doesn't stop it entirely.

True, even with the canteen, water is still the thing I need to replenish the most often.

Can you please explain how? I find this incorrect. I have the canteen, and my deydration is like 150. I am also playing in Hard Core mode as I said. Also as I said, I see it stopping saying I have been taking sips from my canteen after a while. So how does this remove the entire need of water? Are you speaking from experiance?

I agree. I need to replenish water most often. So the question then, is since I do not want to loose my canteen since I may forget where I put it. How much does the Canteen slow down the need for water then?

Mostly I see the dehydration notice if I sleep for too long or if I fast travel too often. Sometimes I do drink too much Nuka Cola or Sarsaparilla after a hard fight and get dehydrated in the process. So for that I do try to carry 3-5 bottles of purified water with me at all times.
