Subtitles?

Post » Fri May 14, 2010 6:08 am

I am wondering how do I put in request that there be subtitles option especially for deaf gamers and that it just don't cover what NPCs said, but the cutscenes too?

I recall in Oblivion even though there's a subtitles option, the intro cutscene was not subtitled. Fortunately, I was able to figure out the plot of the story from NPCs.

But that still svcks that I was threw in the dark from the beginning, just looking at neat cutscene of the King looking sad and holding amulet, etc. and you don't know why until later.

Beside that I enjoyed the game and is looking forward to Skyrim! Just...don't forgot your deaf fans too...please?

Trailer for Skyrim isn't subtitled so that made me a bit worried.

I would very much like to see full support for subtitles in Skyrim too :)

It's unfortunate that Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout 3 didn't support subtitles during the pre-rendered cutscenes. Hopefully Skyrim will be different, or not use any cutscenes at all :P

Also, the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSRtYpNRoN0 :)

I hope they do, though i have no idea who you would contact for this type of suggestion sorry, While i may not be deaf i turn on subtitles in every game i play that has the option simply because i might have missed something they said and usually subtitles stay on screen long enough to catch it.

Subtitles were my best friend in Oblivion since my dialogue would occasionally cut out so I really hope so.

Ooh thanks Freddo! Didn't know they added it for the trailer!

Yeah, it is true that deaf gamers aren't only one that use the subtitles. All more reason to add it, huh? ^_^

I certainly hope there will be subtitles available as an option for the hearing impaired or for anyone who likes them.

Personally, I always turn off all the dialogue subtitles for RPGs because I find that I read them before the person finishes talking and it becomes annoying to hear something that I already read. So to get the full benefit of the voiceover artist performance, I turn them all off.

Im not an English speaker and I always play games with the subtitles on in case I mishear something or fail to understand it.
My grasp of written English is much better.

Id like subtitles for cutscenes too, it doesnt just aid deaf people, but also foreigners.
Good idea :)

Having lost some of my hearing in the Marine Corps (being behind a firing tank is an experience) I would love this.

Suggestion; drop a pm to Nick or Gstaff. There are no guarantees, but the community managers could bring up the messages showing people have an interest, for whatever reason, in having subtitles for cutscenes.

Im sure Skyrim will have a subtitles option. I think every game that comes out these days should be as equally enjoyable to all audiences, and not have features that will hurt the enjoyment of certain players. Dont worry man, you wont miss out on anything in Skyrim.

True TheMightyOrc, but sad thing is, western games tend to be about half and half on whether the game have subtitles or not. This is why I tend to play games that comes from other countries. Better chance of having it translated into English subtitles.

I can list some of popular western games that don't have subtitles.

But games that is RPG genre tend to have better chance of having subtitles, which is good thing for me since that's my favorite genre. :-) I think Elder Scrolls fall in that group? As first person RPG/Adventure/Action or something?

Same here. I hate missing out on a clue because of background noise. It also helps me detect enemies.

Yes please, I have a hearing impairment and although I can hear sound effects and music in games well enough to appreciate a well placed explosion or a good musical score, I can have difficulty with spoken dialogue, and there's no way (at least not yet!) to get lip-reading clues from computer graphics to fill in the gaps!

Unfortunately some game developers neglect to include some simple things that can greatly improve accessibility for the hearing impaired, full subtitles that appear at a fixed point on the screen (top or bottom usually) is the most important. There is absolutely no good reason why deaf gamers should not be able to play and enjoy video games as a visual media, unfortunately with the rise in popularity of voice acting sometimes the text aspect is left behind and it excludes people unnecessarily.

I'm sure it svcks to be a deaf gamer, but I doubt gamesas will make the effort. Hell, Valve is really the only developer out there who goes as far as including sound effect subtitles, and it's really a shame because it's not at all difficult to implement. You just associate every sound with a bit of text and display said text when the sound plays. It's almost all busy work, and that's why it usually doesn't get done. I doubt a mod would do it either, because honestly... I'm afraid your demographic is not very big. There's no real demand for it.

This would be cool. They could simply edit the subtitles into the video, but I suppose ones could be hardcoded in relatively easily. That would be great. If they don't add it, you can always just ask someone like me what the opening cutscene said, and I could send you the text of it, at worst. :)

Just as long as it's optional. I prefer having no sub-titles at all, even during dialogues. I just find it more immersive that way.

I also hope that we have subtitles in this game. I was let down very much so that brink did not have subtitles. I am legally deaf so unless a game has the subs in them it is very hard to figure out what is going on or even what the storyline/timeline is in some cases. I have already put in a pre order note for this game so please dont forget subtitles, many would be very grateful.

Same here. Subtitles is featured in most games so I don't see why Skyrim shouldn't have it!

Its pretty much guarenteed that there will be subtitles, but full subtitles (subtitles for cutscenes & sound effects) is what we may not get, unless they become awar of the amount of people that need it to fully enjoy the game.

Hopefully they will implement it, so that we can have the option of: no subs, subs, and full subs.
