Starting from scratch

Post » Thu May 20, 2010 3:01 am

Time to build a brand new character as the last one left me pretty much unsatisfied. I take the chance to reinstall everything from scratch as I feel my oblivion setup is a little messed up by a few mod I installed manually. This time I'm determined to set everything up with wrye bash.

I'm no experienced mod user so I'd be glad if you guys will follow me in building an accurate setup of just about everything I'll require. I've been reading through several guides but I'm still a bit confused by the install order I should follow. I don't feel brave enough to try out major overhauls like FCOM or WarCry so basically I'm going to install OOO, Unique Landscapes, All Natural, Animated Window Lightning System, Immersive Interiors, OBGE with Liquid Water [and a few shaders like colormood and godrays], an user interface, a color map, a FOV modifier and maybe some quest mods like The Lost Spires. Minor mods like harvest flora/containers are already merged in OOO. I'm not quite fond of town mods like Open Cities/Better Cities so I won't install any. I'm also going to install some texture packs like QTP3 redimized, Bomret SI, improved trees and flora, improved signs and such. I'm not going to use RAEWD or any distant lod mod as they bring my system to its knees. I guess that's pretty much everything I need.

Here's what I did so far:

- removed everything oblivion related from the system. Uninstalled both obmm and wrye bash, uninstalled boss, uninstalled oblivion, removed the game folder, removed mygames\oblivion folder
- reboot
- ran http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner to remove any registry entry left behind
- reinstalled oblivion GOTY from the steam backup
- ran oblivion the very first time, went into graphic settings and cranked everything up
- installed Wrye Bash
- installed Boss
- installed http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1947
- enabled BSA redirection in Wrye Bash
- started up oblivion, exited the sewers and did a clean save

My current esp list [not much for now]:

Spoiler
Active Mod Files:00 Oblivion.esm01 DLCShiveringIsles.esp02 DLCHorseArmor.esp03 DLCOrrery.esp04 DLCVileLair.esp05 DLCMehrunesRazor.esp06 DLCSpellTomes.esp07 DLCThievesDen.esp08 DLCBattlehornCastle.esp09 DLCFrostcrag.esp0A Knights.esp0B quickstart.esp0C Bashed Patch, 0.esp

Arthmoor already advised me to follow http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1191904-heavily-modded-oblivion-and-uop/page__view__findpost__p__17709754 install order but I'm a little in doubt about where everything else fits in the list. First I'm going to install UOP, which comes in a self-installing exe, followed by the UOP for SI, which comes in 7z format and I plan to install with wrye bash.

By looking at the content of the UOP Supplementals it seems that the Unofficial Mods Patch, available as a stand-alone archive, it's already included in the Supplementals. Do I need the UMP as well? Most of all, what install order should I strictly follow for the following list?

- OOO
- Unique Landscapes
- All Natural
- Immersive Interiors [afaik this should come right after AN]
- Animated Window Lightning System
- QTP3
- Bomret Texture Pack for SI

Thanks in advance.

Like you said, Arthmoor has pretty much given you all you need to know about load order. I'll try to help with a little more specifics.

1. Always first, the original http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5296
2. QTP3 or QTP3-R (your choice)
3. http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11261
4. The original http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10739
5. The original http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9969
6. The http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=27710 (yes, you need the originals first, then overwrite with this)
7. Any UI mod you'd like
8. AWLS
9. All Natural
10. Immersive Interiors

Anything else does not rely on install order so can be installed in any order. Just make sure you use BOSS to sort your load order. Hope that helps.

Thanks, here's what I did so far. I'm testing every step so I'm a little slow.

Now it's DarnUI turn. I'm going to use OBMM for DarnUI only because it comes as a convenient scripted omod and the manual install is a real mess.

edit: now that I think about it, my OOO package comes as an omod too, hope I don't screw everything up in using two different mod tools..

You can convert the OOO OMOD into an archive and use BAIN to install it, Once you have it as a BAIN archive you are no longer dependant on when you installed the mod, this makes adding MMM and FCOM easier if you decide to add them to your game, because a BAIN Install Order is very easy to adjust.

That will need some tweaking as the OOO package is heavily scripted. I'll give it a try.

Ok, I've converted every OMOD archive I had into a BAIN-friendly archive [actually the OOO install script was simpler than I thought] and went a little step further:

AWLS wizard required Bomrets Pack for SI to be installed first and so I did, together with Improved trees and flora. DarnUI install script checks for Trollf Loading Screens, so I've installed them first in BAIN. I also put in an harmless FOV modifier and a colored map mod just before installing DarnUI. I felt that at this point it would be safe to install also OBGE LW, as it doesn't provide any resource file apart from the lava texture.

Now I'm a bit puzzled by the BOSS log:

DLCThievesDen - Unofficial Patch - SSSB.esp [Version 1.0.4]

Note: Obsolete. Upgrade to UOP Supplementals 3.3.4 or higher. Then delete this file and rebuild the bashed patch.

This came with the Unofficial Mods Patch. Supplementals version is 3.3.5, should I just delete the SSSB esp and forget about it? I'm not sure I understand what do I need to import into the bashed patch.

Btw, do I need to change anything in the install order above?

For the SSSB plugin, just uncheck that esp in the Bain Installers and then anneal the archive. You really should merge OOO 1.33 and OOO 1.34 together, you want the bugfixes and updates. You can make your OOO install a complex archive, place all of the readmes in a folder named "0 Docs", place the OOO esm, meshes, sounds, textures, and the OOO esp in a folder called "1 OOO Core", then place the extra esp's in a third folder named "2 Optional". If you want, make a fourth folder called "4 Water" to hold the esp's for Waterlife and Water weeds.

Done that! I went a little further, so the merged package structure is now as follows:

I've been reading through the whole wrye bash guide and found this:

A good simple starter ordering would be roughly this sample adjusted as desired:
? DLC
? Unofficial Patches
? DarN
? Sounds
? World textures - expandable
? Environments
? Weather
? Other replacers
? Overhauls - much
? Overhaul Overrides and Patches
? Quests
? Dungeons
? Locations
? Houses
? Unique Landscapes
? Provinces/LOD
? Cities and villages
? Roads and infrastructure
? Races and Bodies
? Companions
? Magic
? Stealth
? Combat
? Scaling and leveling
? errata
? newly acquired and testing mods
? my own projects
? ====
? Unused Mods

With that in mind I moved the UL last in the install order:

Make sure you update Harvest Flora to 3.01, The version 3.0 has a bug when harvesting Oblivion Ingedients (I think it can cause a CTD when harvesting Harada?).
You may also want to use Enhanced Economy to replace Living Economy, but this is optional.
