Red dead redemtion horses

Post » Fri May 21, 2010 5:05 pm

The horses to me where horrible in oblivion they only had one speed, and if your speed was high enough you could actually out run them the only time I actually wanted to ride one was to get over some steep hills but other then that I found them completely useless. you had to get off of your horse just to see who was chasing you because the camera doesn't turn all the way around and you couldn't attack while on the horseback you weren't even aloud to use a simple spell while on them.to me horse riding in red dead redemtion and horses period looked better felt better road better then the one's in oblivion but to be fair oblivion is four years older the red dead.
hopefully bethesda does something about there horses in skyrim I'm pretty sure they did I remember when I found the unicorn in oblivion that was actually refreshing but lets hope to see something like this as a easter egg in skyrim.

Todd Howard has mentioned RDR at least once I think when referring to how horses should be done in games. The general impression I got was 'we're either going to do something as good as that or we're not going to include them at all'.

I won't be too upset to see them excluded personally. I see Skyrim as being an environment more suited to travel by foot, particularly in the harsher areas.

The horses were perfection in RDR and I could really tell the difference when I later played assassins creed brotherhood the horses just made me laugh because of how poor they looked in comparison. I can almost see why horses would not added if they were not close to red dead standards, I in no way expect them to look as good but would still like them to be rideable and look decent.

As is Beth won't be able to achieve it or you dislike that form?
If it's the former I agree, RDR horses would be awesome though

I think Beth is not saying much about hroses other than "We're either doing them right or we're not doing them" because it will either meet RDRs standards (maybe less though...) or no horses

I only used Shadowmere though so I don't care much about horses. However in RDR they were absolutely perfect so if they're done liek that...

I think if they did something similar just with different controls that might work, but then the stamina and running system is different in the 2 games so they couldn't really ever be too similar.

Well why you think so?
Well BGS has experienced developers and new technologies for easer animation creating and better animation blending, horses are not dragons does they will harder to be done?
Making horses ridable also is not hard as well as adding some most popular improvements what modders done, even mounted combat isn't so hard to be done why need to fear?

Less than 6 months before release and they're still toying with the idea. That's why I fear.

I think Bethesda already has RDR-like horses. The problem is getting the horses to react to the environment without any glitches.

What happens when a horse travels into water?
What happens when a horse runs into a tree?
What happens when a horse gets attacked by a dragon?
Runs off a cliff?
Etc.

This. I wouldn't MIND it if they were in the game but I would not be heart broken if they didn't make the cut if it came down to a decision of something else of more importance. I do remember playing RDR back in the day and noticing the musculature formations as the horses walked. You could see the muscles and I was blown away that the muscles moved like muscles should. I understand why Todd said this. If they do have a chance to put horses in then they might as well get it right. I applaud him for this statement, I think he handled it well.

Well does Todd say thats Skyrim in develop around five years and they want do the game for six months?
You think they will release half-baked game as it was with Oblivion because of certain time limit?
At last I hope there will be good modding potential so I will have my cake even if thats will require to make cream and cherries by self.

Ok, the horses in Oblivion aren't as good as the ones in red dead redemption, that's true, BUT Red Dead Redemption came out almost five years later. Oblivion's horses were good for their time. Think back to 2006, how many games were out that even had mountable horses? How many of those had mounted combat? Almost none. The only game I can even think of right now that had ride-able horses before Oblivion was Zelda Ocarina of Time. Other than that... Daggerfall. All of that being said... yes, if they include horses in Skyrim, they're gonna have to make some serious improvements. But they're not even completely sure horses will be in the final game.

You have to keep in mind, horses are a huge part of Red Dead Redemption. Honestly I thought Oblivion's horses looked pretty good for their time. But yeah in the gameplay trailer at around 1:21 you can get a general idea of what horses will look like.

Well GUN had some pretty nice horses. A lot better than Oblivions at least.

I would absolutely love to see horses on par with the quality of RDR or Shadow of the Colossus, Skyrim.

Horses in RDR are perfect, but look at the size of the map it's way bigger than oblivion, and with less forested areas, so when you start running with the horse, the speed feels right...
If horses in Skyrim are implemented, I don't see how they will get them to run, since its a highly forested area and well running would be awkward with tight turns and without hitting a tree every 3 seconds...

I don't think speed is really the issue. It's more versatility. The horses in Oblivion weren't versatile at all. I felt trapped and vulnerable while on a horse. Skyrim's horses need to be more open, they need to have better controls, and most of all, there needs to be some blatant advantages to riding a horse. In Oblivion it seemed totally pointless.

There's a good chance that if horses are included in Skyrim, they will be like RDR because I remember Todd saying how much he admired that game.

hopefully the horses will be easier to ride and handle. in oblivion riding a horse was like turning a box with legs. and just a couple of months ago I figured out that the horses could actually jump I would never had guessed that something that handle like a semi truck can jump.
