Lack of Random Encounters?

Post » Thu May 27, 2010 2:54 am

Hey,
Has anyone else playing NV noticed a distinct lack of random encounters compared to FO3? In FO3 you'd get jumped every few minutes while wandering around the wasteland. In NV Random Encounters seem to be much less frequent; there are zones filled with preplaced enemies, sure, but not many truly random encounters like the Enclave vertibird dropoffs or the BoS/Outcast/Talon Company patrols of FO3. Makes wandering around the wasteland kinda desolate.

The WW perk offers exactly 15 "encounters", most are just small easter eggs with no in game content to them.

Wild wasteland only adds 15 random encounters in preset places anyway, but the ones you get are way entertaining, trust me. Also, it's a desert, seriously, do you expect a bunch of people to be walking around there 24/7, it's an inhospitable place made even worse by the nuclear war, there isn't going to be much besides mutants like Deathclaws (shudder), scorpions of all shapes and sizes, and other assorted mutated animals. I think the amount of random encounters are just right considering the circumstances.

I've had four that I enjoyed so far.

Spoiler

Holy Frag Grenades
Rex saying "Arroooo!" and me getting the option to ask if somebody is trapped in a well (the other options were hilarious, too) which led to me finding a well (Jimmy's Well) and a unique BB gun.
Two over the emergency broadcast radio on the last mission:
"Game over man, game over!"
"They're coming out of the walls!"

What was it called? Was it in the well? The wild wasteland encounter sound played and I saw the icon in the top left.

WW has nothing to do with random encounters

All it does is add in special encounters like those seen in the original fallout games and changes some things that happen in missions.

Now the random encounters from FO3 are absent but youll still see patrol parties and caravan traders with mercs.

One encounter i had: nothing great but

At the El Dorado gasstation where a vipers gang spawns, i was walking through as usual thinking i was gonna see the same exact thing but things were abit different second time around.

Instead of finding the vipers, i come across a lone prospector and up the road i find the vipers gang spread out on the road along with a trader/mercs and brahmin.. all dead.

what happend? who knows, all that matters is that the encounter was different.

I just discovered something much more exciting than random encounters in my current playthrough (my second).

The world is dynamic. So far I have been several places expecting to encounter the same thing again as in my first game and found something completely different. As in, in my first game, a certain building was the scene of a slaughter, with traps set up everywhere and dire warning notes left on the bodies and scribbled in blood on the walls. In my second game the exact same building is a now a bustling office with living NPCs going about their business, very much alive and with no blood stains or traps to be found!

I've also discovered safes and other containers that don't have the same thing from game to game, and buildings that I once could enter without pause in one game now are locked or require keys!

And I've also seen the normal random encounters from FO3.

New Vegas is definitely going to be more fun to go back and replay than FO3 ever was!

Unique or random encounters, discussions of side-quests, companions, locations, etc. are all things a lot of people want to discover on their own or be surprised by, regardless of whether or not they are involved with the main storyline.

If you really need to include a specific example, use spoiler tags, or be ambiguous and talk in generalities like I did in my above post.

Hey, no problem. As long as you learn from your mistakes, everything is good. People are just a little more sensitive to the issue lately because most new posters seem to completely ignore that the New Vegas boards are split into two sections, General Discussion and Spoilers, and hence post spoilerific thread titles in General Discussion and tick everyone off.

Now, back on topic, what do people think of the fact that locations and environments actually change from game to game now?
