Why Skyrim should have werebears

Post » Fri Jun 18, 2010 1:32 am

"In Skyrim, it is an old tradition to rub canis root on the trees surrounding your house as a ward against werebears... /.../ ...In Black Marsh and southern Morrowind, werecrocodiles stalk the swamps. Black Marsh also shares with the Imperial Province and the wetter parts of Elsweyr the vile presence of werelions. Valenwood's werevultures are not found in any other province. The wereboar has found both the climates of High Rock and Hammerfell amenable. As I mentioned before, the werebear is the most common lycanthrope in Skyrim, and is also found in the northern parts of High Rock, the Imperial Province, and Morrowind. The werewolf can be found in every province. The seventh lycanthrope, which I have never seen but my trusted peers have assured me exists, is a wereshark that roams the oceans around Tamriel."

The original book can be found on here: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:On_Lycanthropy

The lore according to this clearly states that Skyrim has Werebears. There should also be weresharks (a few specimens) and werewolves as these beasts may be found throughout Tamriel.

But ofcourse we all know it`s likely that they are going to ignore the lore. What happened to werebears in Morrowind? What happened to lycanthropes on the whole in Oblivion? There should have been werewolves roaming around in there.

yeah i can see where youre coming from, but i do agree, they probably will ignore their own lore.
but doesnt that seem weird? if they made it up, why cant they just apply it to their games?

What about ManBearPig? I'm super serial here...

Stop with the ManBearpig crap. It's too much.

OP: Werebears would be a nice edition to Skyrim, so would werewolves. Skyrim just screams Lycanthropes! They weren't in Oblivion due to "Time constraints". Which makes me wonder if they will be in this game because they removed spears due to "Time constraints". And like werewolves, spears was asked for alot.

I`m talking ManBear or ManBoar here. Although there shouldn`t be any wereboars in Skyrim.

Its not so much about ignoring lore as it is about the compromises inherit in making games.

But yes, I want me some wearbears.

Werebears? It's so dark and gloomy. I think Skyrim needs some Care Bears.

There should also be weresharks

That is why I'm perfectly fine with them keeping the variety of were-beasts small.

As far as lore goes, the idea of a were-bear does fit Hircine themes better than the rest of the options. While the lore makes make it clear that, as the lord of the hunt, any native predator could be appropriate - I worry excessive variety of were beasts might make them feel less rare. If they did include more than one species of were-beast in Skyrim though, I wouldn't have a problem with them adding bears. I mean in Bloodmoon a bear was one of the three aspects of Hircine you could fight (The other two being the hunter and the wolf.)

werebears... werecrocodiles... werelions... wereboar... werewolf... wereshark...

Maybe its just me, but when I see in-game books such as this I don't treat them as "zomg written in stone lore here guys", I treat them as I would a book I would come across in the real world, with as much potential to be full of misinformation and bias as anything you might find on Amazon.com.

I mean weresharks? Really?

That said seeing werewolves and even werebears in Skyrim would be pretty neat I think we should be drawing a line somewhere before we start getting into wereshark/beaver/chipmunk/parakeet territory, hmm 'kay?

Half man, half bear, and half pig?

It`s either half man and half bear OR half man half boar. Get it right. Sheesh... the newcomers these days...
