Your thoughts on new vegas?

Hey, as my first forum post I thought i'd get the consensus of the community here on what New Vegas is like, it should arrive tommorow or the day after, the xbox version, and as a longterm series fan I can't wait. However, iv'e heard some concerning things, particuarly the horrific ammount of bugs, the limited or poor music, and "less memorable" moments, however, from the limited footage iv'e allowed myself to see, it looks great. It looks alot in line with Fallout 2 to me, and i'm happy Obsidian worked on this title, I just hope it's not another Never Winter Nights 2.

So yeah, tell me what you think :)

First impression was 7/10, as the game played out my impression went upward from there. The game has bugs, and it has [for me] un-liked intentional aspects to it... Things like the Geckos and pick-able plants looking "pasted" over the land and not part of it. The Gecko's run animation looks odd at distance as though on skates. Bighorners spin in place as though their hooves were on casters; these are not bugs... Bugs are Geckos peeking out of hill-sides where only their head and hand may be visible, or gang members crouching hip deep in a boulder.

If you liked Fallout 1, and are interested a game that simulates what its like to live there, there is no finer game than FO:NV for this. Right now I'm at 9/10 based only on what I've encountered so far
(and I've only just cleared the convicts out of Primm).

So far I love this game. Well, it's easy to love seeing as it is so very similar to Fallout 3. If you love FO3, you can't but love this one too. Being similar to FO3 isn't a bad thing in my book, but I do wish they had tried to make it a tad more different. I mean - they have reused most of the building blocks, weapons and stuff like that. Quite a bit of it is retextured, and there are of course some new stuff, but a lot of it isn't even retextured. Same building blocks, same engine, same scripting, same type of NPCs, same Havoc, exactly the same UI and menu-system - even the levelling up sounds and looks exactly the same! That is why I half-jokingly said it looked like a Fallout 3 mod. Actually, I've seen mods that's more different from FO3 than this game. It's not that it isn't still good, but it does seem a bit lazy.

There are of course differences, though. Mainly in the feel of the game, although it's very subtle. A different kind of humour - the developers felt that Fallout 3 was too serious, that Bethesda hadn't understood the sense of humour these games had. So they have reverted back to that. I don't know, though, I thought there was a lot of black humour in Fallout 3 too. But there is a nuance difference in the feel of this game, although I can't quite put my finger on it. Perhaps it's just my imagination, even, seeing as I know about Fallout 1 and the difference there.

But the game is overall great. It is like playing Fallout 3 for the first time - it's awesome to explore this new wasteland, finding the new towns and settlements, doing new quests, learning more about your background and the main story. It is all very interesting - and the main story is very different from Fallout 3. They have made the game different enough to let you feel you really are at a different place. It's not the same factions, quarreling over the exact same thing as before.

The main difference from Fallout 3, as I can see it, is that you have a few new skills. Mainly Survival. They have implemented more of a crafting system in this game, where you can create different items from various ingredients, pick flowers and herbs and create different healing and support items almost like Alchemy in TES. You can even disassemble ammo you don't need, and piece them together again and create new ammo. I haven't learned all about that yet, but it's quite cool. If I have one complaing about this game, it's that the radio station is somewhat boring compared to the awesomeness that is Three Dog. Not to mention that there seem to be much fewer songs here than in FO3.

But otherwise, I'm enjoying this game very, very much.

I was a little disappointed at first because it felt more like a huge FO3 expansion than a stand alone game, but after playing for a few days now, it’s really grown on me.

It’s basically FO3 2.0, but I’m really digging the stamp the OG developers left on it. It really feels like a Fallout game.

Well when I first saw it (my brother playing it) I was fairly disappointed that they kept the same HUD and Menus, and most of the "common" meshes/textures. But as soon as I got to play it I really started to love the feel of the game. The quests are great, the landscape is perfect for what it is supposed to be. I just really feel immersed in the world, and I'm actually starting to like it a lot more than FO3. It's like they had the ground work already laid down and could just focus 100% on the art and stories in the game.

It hasn't grabbed me as much as FO3 did, but I can't be hating it because I've put over 9 hours into it this weekend.

Pretty much this for me. I've played for about 26 hours and every time I get a new quest I cringe because I just don't want to do them. :sadvaultboy:

Normally I would just tell you that I hate Obsidian and how they can't make a game without a billion game-breaking bugs. But I have to admit it, this is the first Obsidian game that I have ever played without experiencing any game-breaking bugs. Also, its better than fallout 3 was.

When I first started, I was underimpressed. The game seemed like a quest grind with little room for exploring. Then I set aside my first character (20 something hours, just got the chip) and rolled a new one. I took to the hills and explored. After 25 hours on this character, I have just made it to Novac, at level 10.

There is an awful lot to see, but you have to get off the roads and into the hills. It will be dangerous: Caves with deathclaws and nightstalkers, large camps of mobs, etc, but if you like to explore, that's the way to do it.

Most of the quests I've done have been interesting, but there are a few fedex type backtracking quests. Overall, this is a very good game so far.

-What I have player (~20 hours) has been fun with a few notable exceptions, like loosing karma when picking up loot from a corpse or in abandoned camps with no obvious affiliation.
Also in towns some empty houses have karma penalty's when looting but some obviously occupied houses do not.

-I have only heard one song over my radio, possible poor timing as I turn it off in the wilderness and only turn it on when I enter a friendly town, I'm sure there is more than one tho'

-Slowdown, stuttering, bugs are way more prevalent than I feel is acceptable.

-and finally, xbox pre-order codes are still not active in Australia which is just pathetic all things considered.

My thoughts after having delved into it:

Fallout: New Vegas deserves to have the "3" after its title, Bethesda's game is the one that should be considered a spin-off. I didn't follow NV's development very closely because I wanted to be surprised by how Obsidian handled it. And I must say that I'm very pleased...New Vegas just "feels" like Fallout which is not a feeling I ever got from Fallout 3. Totally subjective opinion obviously.

Oh and edit to add: Bethesda won a lot of points for allowing this game to happen in my book.

I started loving it as soon as I began the game, honestly. ^^
I liked how much freedom of choice there was in the intro, and how many different ways there are to go about a quest. I found the amount of options in FO3 to be sort of lacking, and its dialogue felt lackluster.
In comparison, NV's story is a lot more entertaining IMO, and I think that the quests are very, very fun - most of the ones I've done so far have been quite creative, and not just run-of-the-mill "Hey, umm, fetch some soda for me, will you?" or "I need ___ of these monsters killed, etc, etc".

Luckily, CTD's and bugs haven't been very frequent for me (maybe ran across two or three in about 30 hrs gameplay), but I'm playing on a PC, if that's relevant at all.
Anyway... Umm, overall, I totally adore it~ I think it's very fun. :)

I like the Fallout 3 setting better. Everything looked more destroyed, and it felt more like a warzone.
When on the roads in NV, you can see the vast expanse of nothingness all around you. While the flatness and seemingly emptiness is cool, it doesn't make me want to venture off the trails and explore as much.
Of course, don't take my opinion too seriously, I'm way too nostalgic to completely accept the new setting just yet. I haven't spent that much time playing.

I love it honestly, after a bit I changed character though due to the fact a non com just does not survive early on imo.
So I went with the usual sneak, gun character and relaxed into the game, but getting a little annoyed with a return of bullet sponge's, ( love DT though )
Finding out that a fair bit of dialogue changes based on skill level even outside of the check system which I like.

So liking it, but some things were overstated in the lead up to release imo.

+ The sound effects -- Women screaming in Freeside, People having six through the ventilation shafts, The Morrowind drowning sound, bottles breaking, pvssyr
+ Unique Weapons look unique
+ Factions -- each with their own sets of fame and infamy
+ Fresh Content with the same Fallout 3 feel
+ Cluttered landscape (no more big plains)
+ Interactive Companions
+ Interactive Traits -- For instance, if you lack intelligence your character will speak with poor grammar.

- Some interiors are just too big and cause heavy FPS hits.
- Outdated character models
- Could use some animation tweaks -- (Open doors, Carry a body, Slow down the iron sight transition)
- Geckos...they just don't belong..they fit in Fallout 2..maybe its just the creature design + animation

I'm really happy with this game. Its still too early to decide if I like it better than Fallout 3 though. I'm not liking the fact that the game will come to a definite ending. Thank god for mods, though. :)

I think it is a brilliant game, it has improved over FO3 in every way and I love it. Yes there are bugs, but to be honest nearly all of them would be a small problem if I managed to regularly save manually, I'm just a slave to the autosave. :P

I love the improved story writing, the small tweaks to a recognisable HUD and to the game in general, the new environment is brilliant, I like the feeling of going from the pure anarchy of the capital wasteland, with only a few small outposts of civilisation, to the semi-civilised world of New Vegas, where you actually have powerful factions all vying for power. It gives the game more depth and makes the world feel larger.

I have experienced glitches and bugs, I just experienced my first corrupted save after 50 hours of play or so, setting me back 10 hours, but again if I had simply remembered to manually save (Which I should of done anyway since Veronica disappeared.) Then it wouldn't be a problem. I can understand the anger of those saying that Obsidian and Bethesda should of tested it more diligently, yet I also understand that this is a large game, and experiences has varied across players. Some hardly experience any problems, others the game is unplayable.

Some problems just don't get seen until they are widely distributed and companies today seem to have adopted the policy of solving the problems after they have occurred rather than prevention. Either way, if they released the game in two weeks time to fix bugs, then nobody would be playing it till two weeks, at least now many players can play it with no problem, and those who can't? Well you can see it as not losing any time, as if they had delayed to fix any problems you would be waiting as long as you are now for patches...

Still I am overall impressed and pleased to play this game, the game itself is brilliant and will probably be one of my favourites.

Aside from stuttering issues on my high end rig that otherwise shouldn't be happening at all, I've been finding the game pretty enjoyable. I haven't even hit New Vegas and yet I've been doing tons of quests and exploring outside. To me, the game seems much bigger than FO3 even with the FOOK2 mod additions (which adds in a ton of new places.)

The overall tone of the game in many places has been relatively serious, but I have run across some places that have old style Fallout humor which has been hilarious. I'm absolutely loving having the old ammunition types back and the fact that weapon mods put vanilla no frills weapons on par with some of the named ones giving a lot more variety. For example, a fully modded laser rifle is on par, if not better than the named prototype laser you can pick up. The same holds true for a lot of the other standard weapons.

The only real gripe I've had reallly are the bugs that'll get patched out through patches and/or mods, and the inability to remove weapon mods. I got a bit too used to the WMK mod with FOOK2 and being able to add and remove them at will hehe.

While I do miss the scenery of the familiar Capitol Wasteland, I'm no stranger to the Mojave desert since I was born and raised there.
