Any plans for ships and sailing

Post » Mon Jun 21, 2010 10:42 am

Well, the title says it all. I for one would love to see ships serve as an intrinsic part of the new skyrim world, whether it be trade, travel, or again lodging. I think we'd all love to see ships serve a purpose other than just sitting around a waterfront and looking static.

There was a mod in oblivion for piloting your own ship but alas it was rather clunky and a bit unrealistic as you are the only one running the darn thing, but nevertheless it brought in some much needed wanderlust and immersion into the somewhat limited nautical world of oblivion.

So then...are we going to possibly see a change in the new TES V game pertaining to ships and travel? What do you guys think!?

Apparently the "static-ness" of Oblivion's ships is returning. You can just look at them.

I would really like it too (to be able to sail them or watch other people sail them), but my guess is that it would take too much energy/time for them to implement it? I don't see any other reason for why they wouldn't do it. I mean, it's not that they can't do it. Any game developer should have the skills to be able to implement them.

No we wont, they are still asthetics, you'll see that information in the Part 2 thread, maybe they serve as transportation..but you can't "ride" them

Would like to see them implmented as a form of fast travel between two of the major cities perhaps, but nothing beyond that springs to mind.

I'm pretty sure I heard/read in an interview somewhere that there is no sailing. I don't think there would really be a vast amount of water to sail on really though? Just a few rivers and lakes

I really can't imagine any feasible way of being able to operate our own ships, but I would like to see dynamic ships moving about the gameworld.

What's that? Create a character named charter and give him dialog and a script to transport to other port towns that could make it into the game?

THAT'S AN EXCELLENT IDEA SCHIZOPHRENIC VOICE #7, YOU REALLY ARE WORTH ALL THE THERAPY AND MEDICATION I TAKE!!!

Maybe for TES Black Marsh or TES Summerset Isles but not in Skyrim.

well bummer, I hadn't read the second part of the fact compendium but I'm sure it'll be a day 1 or possibly later mod, It won't be too realistic of course but it's better than nothing....or who knows maybe bethesda will do some sort of content adding although it doesn't look to hopeful.

I myself would love to be known as dovhakin, scourge of skyrim!

Yeah that. Sailing ships which occaisionally make the run between the 3 or so noteable coastal settlements would certainly look cool. It could be interesting if you got a quest to investigate one of them by posing as newly hired muscle and investigating rumors of clandestine meetings with smugglers at night on open water. Having to fight smugglers and ralley the honest crew members against your captain could make for a fun time. But mostly the biggest thing you'd get from having one or two ships doing that would be they would serve as a nice visual element when you caught a glimpse of them whether you were exploring the coast or throwing a wood elf off the end of the pier. I have no idea though how difficult getting a large moving building like that to behave and look believable on the water and in the wind. To some degree implementing them wouldn't be TOO hard, but implementing them in a way that didn't look terrible might be.

Apparently the "static-ness" of Oblivion's ships is returning.

That goes back further than Oblivion though. They were static buildings in Morrowind too. It's just that some of them had a teleportation service run out of them - they probably just pretended to be ship captains so they didn't get killed by the mages guild for offering competition. Yeah I'm kidding - but its funny to think of them as black-market teleportation specialists disguised as sailors.

Well if there are pirates I hope their captain is voiced by Geoffrey Rush. Perfect. Pirate. Voice. Wishful thinking, but it'd be cool imo!

I'd love there to be a mission where you go out on a ship and fight a giant squid or something. It could be triggered by hearing a seaman telling a story about his battle with the creatures years ago.

But alas, something as cool is that is but a dream...

I mostly would want to trade with mine, but if they did some kind of random ship generator, I heard that you could get a party to follow you in the game so I would try to raid other ships or at least sink em after I pillage em blackbeard style.

There will probably be sailing boats deep in the shores beyond an invisible barrier/border. Something added for flavor.

Mweh, hopefully some brilliant modders can make the ships move again! Some guy did it for oblivion (Reneer?) so it should be doable for Skyrim.

the setting is skyrim so we will not likely see alot of ships and boats, lets wait for the elder scrolls: hammerfell to have sailing adventures, because im sure redguards are the race with the pirate inspired culture

I just want to see a new ship in the port once In a while. And ships moving in the distance and moving in and out of the port.
