Glasses Discussion

Post » Mon Jun 28, 2010 4:56 am

So I think its time I started another discussion on whether or not glasses should be in Skyrim. I started a previous thread about this about a week ago, and got a lot of feedback from you guys. It was about 60-40 in my previous thread, with about 60% saying no to glasses, and 40% yes. I am still sticking by my opinion in that I do not think they would be out of place in Skyrim.
As stated by some forum members earlier, glasses actually date back to the 13th century, and are not really an advanced technology like some people think. Many medieval myths and stories include people who wore some type of eye glass. They do not even have to look like todays usual eye glasses, just a simple design like these which date back to the 1400's-
the second link actually dates back to around 1350.-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Conrad_von_Soest,_%27Brillenapostel%27_(1403).jpg

Well, "Four Eyes" would be a good Argonian name.

To the op: you should also point out that glasses/goggles are already in TES in the opening thread. Who cares about history of the real world, when the TES world already has something similar to want your asking for.

Providing some links to the pics of goggles, lens, etc from past games would be even better.

I would like to see glasses in Skyrim myself.

I could maybe see some crazy old alchemist with some super oldschool glasses. But I don't think they should be widespread.

Use some of links in the prior thread if you can't find any. And remember to put the stuff in the opening thread or many will miss it. That way you can shut down any people saying it does not make any sense according to lore, etc.

I know some past TES games had helmets with goggles that kinda resembled glasses, Morrowind was the game I think. Having trouble finding a link though.

Considering that Tamriel draws from so many cultures and time periods for inspiration, I think the "they had spectacles in the high middle ages" argument is moot. I don't think we really should try to try and relate Tamriel to any fixed point in our own world's history.

Morrowind, however, had protective goggles and the like. Something akin to the http://www.google.com/search?um=1&hl=en&biw=1280&bih=909&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=eskimo+snow+goggles&aq=f&aqi=g1&aql=&oq= could be interesting, though.

I like that idea, those snow visors actually look pretty cool, and would fit perfectly with Skyrim's harsh winter climate setting.

I have yet to see a pair of medieval styled glasses that look cool so I'm gonna have to say 'no thank you' on that one. And from a non opinionated standpoint, there is just an enormous amount of clothing, armor, and accessories far more worthy of Bethesda's character artists' attention than that.

I will be a bit disappointed if Bethesda does not include any type of eyewear for Skyrim, whether they be eye glasses or some type of goggles. With the snow and all, it seems snow goggles fit well in the game.

I think it should be the players choice...if you don't want to wear glasses then so be it.

No shades though, thats just stupid.

I don't think there needs to be glasses lol but they can make them and you don't have to wear them if you don't want to like like gloves or something lol.

Now you see....I really liked wearing gloves in Morrowind, i was sad we lost so much Clothing variety in Oblivion.

I like my richly dressed robes, shirts, pants, bracelets and belts and necklaces. So let me have those please.

Glasses....eh...To be honest i am dipping my toes in the water for that. I think if its done right it'll be cool to see

Don't count on it
