unarmed grappling idea

Post » Sat Jul 03, 2010 1:12 pm

had an idea on a few days back and i think it could be a fun way to improve unarmed combat.

what i'm talking about is holding/grappling, imagine if you will that you could use your unarmed hand to hold an opponent by the neck or arm immobilizing the opponent for a few seconds, in those few seconds you could strike the enemy with your other arm (armed or unarmed).
while sneaking you could use your hands to perform a chokehold to your opponent rendering him/her unconscious instead of using a dagger to kill.
these maneuvers would only be effective on humanoid enemies though.

if you have any other ideas on this could work feel free to post

if you disagree please post the reasons why and preferably give feedback for a better solution or other ideas.

Sounds pretty good. I'd think it'd be hard to make though. I just hope they add special stuff for unarmed combat now, because in Oblivion, hand-to-hand was just a "no weapon" skill. Hands are just as hard as a blade (or at least they should be...to some extent).

I do hope they add in something for Hand-to-hand. I never used it, but you know someone role plays as a black belt.

hmm... seems like a less than plausible idea when you consider the fact that UFC Undisputed fails pretty hard at emulating mixed martial arts.

If THQ (not that they are great developers) cant do it in a game devoted to unarmed combat, I doubt BGS could do a worthwhile job in a game like Skyrim. I think it would be cheesy, scripted and stiff at best.

you misunderstand, rather than wrestling techniques and ground grappling the idea it's to add more functionality into hand to hand combat and not just landing punches.
more like basic (standing position) cqc than anything else really.

I'd love to see more involved h2h than the drunken brawling of previous games. H2h seems to be treated as a last resort, as something you use when your main weapon has been knocked out of your hand, rather than something you roleplay. Holds and throws would be very cool (and only available if both hands are free), various combos that by a master can be as deadly (with all manners of choking and bone-snapping) as it's hard to defend against, and of course kicks (although I doubt we'll ever see THIS). The problem with this is making it work against non-humanoids. H2h in Skyrim can be good, depending on if it's still a skill (with a perk tree of its own, or as a perk tree of 2h weapons), or just "clicking the attack button with nothing equipped".

that's why i said this in the OP:

"these maneuvers would only be effective on humanoid enemies though."

and i'm pretty sure there won't be a shortage of humanoid opponents.

I actually want one of my main characters to use H2H, and I'm hoping we at least see some perks for it. Maybe one that lets us block blades with our hands? (like in Kung Fu with your palms), or perhaps one that lets us disarm an opponent, or break limbs.
