Isn't it developed on the Xbox and then ported?

I'm unsure. However, during Oblivion's release on the PS3 I'm sure there were a few stability issues.

Was Crysis 2 made for the console, or was it ported from the PC?

Since Skyrim is being made with consoles in mind, I think its performance will be optimised for them hopefully reducing any performance issues. Truth be told though I'm hardly a techno boffin ( :brokencomputer: ) so all of this is just speculation on my part

Development is being done for the XBox 360 firsthand with that being ported to the PS3. The PC version will get some minor changes such as higher rez textures but not much more than that, but there is a team working solely on the PC version. Beth do their best to optimise it for all systems and to make it look about equal on all systems except for the higher rez textures for PC.

Crysis 2 got a lot of flac from the PC community for being so console centric.

Crysis 2 was made for the consoles, then ported to the PC. If it wasn't, it'd have a beefier PC version than it does. They also had to release a patch for the PC version that changed "Press Start" to "Press Enter."

As opposed to removing the screen in its entirety, eh? Why do console games even still have those "Press Start" screens instead of jumping straight to the menu system? Is it just out of tradition, or perhaps as a way to keep the gameplay demos looping in stores?

No idea really; maybe it is just simply a traditional throw back? Meh, 'pressing start' has never bothered me in the past *shrug*

It's so the game can register which controller (if you have multiple controllers plugged in/linked to the console) it will use as the default, I.E. PLayer 1.

This, though that can also just be solved by dashboard activity on the Xbox, for example.

Skyrim is developed first and foremost for 360 (the lowest common denominator) and then ported up. The PC will have better graphics than the PS3 and 360, but aside from that they all have the same experience and shouldn't suffer from any performance issues on any platform (unless you have a really bad PC)

I would suspect that even though the game is designed and optimized to run at at steady 30 fps in most circumstances, you're still going to hit times and areas that will cause the framerate to drop below that.

Probably going to regret asking this, but why does the 360 always automatically equate to the 'lowest common denominator'? I know the PS3 has a slight edge over it technology wise, but it's not that much of a difference is it?

Slightly better is still better.

If anything, Skyrim will run on the 360 better than on the Ps3 and PC, because it's being designed for the 360 and then ported to the Ps3 and PC.

Do you remember the Oblivion E3 demo, with its dynamic soft shadows and less obnoxious ambient lighting? That thing actually grinded down to what appears to be about 15FPS during the Battle of Kvatch sequence. Perhaps that was partly why they ultimately toned the game down, graphically.
