Fast Travel "Events"

Post » Tue Jul 27, 2010 2:17 pm

After the semi-disappointment that was DA2, I went back and played DA:O.
Now, its not necessarily "fast travel" in that game, but when moving from one area on the map to another, you could have random encounters, story events, special merchants, etc.

I think this would be great in Skyrim.

Maybe you run into some bandits, or a lost child, maybe a farm is being attacked by ogres, or maybe a traveling merchant that's being attacked by goblins, and gives you a discount for saving him.

Now, not every single fast travel should trigger these events. Maybe a 1/10 chance to trigger an event.

It would add a little bit variety, but of-course, theres people that won't like it.

I want to hear your opinions!

Fast Travel with Interruptions is nice I remember games like Baldur's Gate where you always could expect mobs / even quests related interruptions .....

sounds cool as long as they're not all you ending up in fights.

I wouldn't want "fast travel events" specifically. That would imply having to fast travel to trigger them. Rather, I would like encounters while travelling some time while playing, that can happen whether or not you're fast traveling (if fast travelling it interupts you, otherwise otherwise you simply walk into them or they walk into you).

Of course.

I'd love to see a traveling salesman, that sells things that you can't normally get elsewhere. Or a lost child, that follows you to the town your going to.

Or, maybe, just maybe, you could stumble upon a new location between where you are and your destination.

I could support this as long as they vary.

It will get annoying to fight 3 bandits whenever I fast travel.

Sorry, I assumed that they'd already include this in skyrim. I thought that random events while not fast traveling were confirmed. Maybe I misheard.

Other: Random encounters while traveling yes, Fast Traveling required to trigger them no.

And I mean truly random, not Fallout 3 "At these predetermined locations" random.

Alright, edited the poll.

I thought that most people would think the events wouldn't be fast travel exclusive.

That's how Fallout 1 & 2 are; It sorely missing in FO3.

**I would like for events to be possible, and when they occur, the game sets the PC somewhere in between their starting point and destination. Also, there should be some events that can't happen via 'fast travel', but must be discovered through real time exploration.

[Or... If only they had attributes.... They could check the PC's perceptiveness instead of it being purely random].

Exactly what I was thinking...Fallout 3's "random" events lacked in more ways than one, with the limited locations being a major factor- instead of being jumped by Regulators/Talon Company at random locations, they were pretty much "waiting at every destination" and nonexistent anywhere in between. Bah.

Categorize events- I can see some types that would need locations, for instance meeting a traveling carriage atop a mountain miles from any road being problematic. But there are plenty of ideas that would work as "anytime, anywhere" and those should be able to occur on precisely that basis. Someone pursuing you (for any number of reasons) could track you until they catch up. Then again- even the ability to miss one once spawned could work. Roving merchant, for instance- code it so that they spawn along your travel path, but if you change course or pass by them without interacting, when you leave that map cell "unspawn" them. They're not "roving" if they camp in one spot until you meet them, right?

I have suggested a fast travel method that can include scripted random events that sometimes were forced and sometimes skip-able, in http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1162378-fast-travel.

It is a combination of Fallout 3 version of fast travel method and Morrowind style, with some additional spice to freshen things a bit.

Random encounters is really the essential thing that would make Fast Travel completely immersive.

It also sounds quite a bit like Fallout 2. FO2 had random overland map encounters while traveling, and they could sometimes be skipped. (and could be hostile, neutral, friendly, and /or one of several unique events that only happen once.)

That's interesting, although I have not played FO2, it seems that I would have liked it, at least the fast travel method. ;)

Good idea but it has to happen to everyone (just make it a bit more sever for fast traveller as a punishment for taking the easy way out)

I voted yes, they should also happen while using carriages though.
