Rare and Unique loot

Post » Thu Aug 05, 2010 10:10 am

What do you guys mean by 'unique hand placed items"? Like in morrowind where you might find some epic gear and it has a journal beside it with the persons story?

More like items that were hand-placed by Bethesda in difficult-to-access areas. Not necessarily by a person in the game.

I was really disappointed by Oblivion that there was no Ebony Armor, Dragonbone Cuirass or LordsMail in it only this stupid light armor thing from hircirine what really svcked if you wanna play with heavy Armor, Deadric Armor was just to common in Oblivion, you had really trouble in Morrowind to get this daedric pauldron, if you dont want to kill Divyath Fyr. And the old Morrowindstyle Daedric Armor was a way more stylish then the Oblivion one. >.>

But yeah, I missed cool unique armor in Oblivion, stuff that existed in Morrowind. Also think the same about the Daedric Armor. It will be really really interesting to see how this looks in Skyrim, but I hope we won't see it until we've looked in every nook and cranny... like in Morrowind :D

It will be cool if there's some important & really really powerful character in Skyrim that wears Daedric Armor as well, like Divyath Fyr. In Morrowind, there were several ways to get some daedric items. I think there were three daedric gauntlets for instance.

one thing i would like to see that is in other games are sets of armor and weapons. there should be one of each of them and if and when you get them you get a small bonus for wearing all the gear.

i also wish that they had pre picked locations for the loot but that the unique items themselves in place in different order each game so that you cant just run and get the "sword of Assassins Creed easiness" in the same cave. this was one downside of morrowinds sytemt. once you knew where to find the stuff it was hard to ignore it.

In addition to visual uniqueness of items, if we could have http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1107940-perks-they-can-make-each-play-through-a-unique-experience, we could make really unique items that could behave quite differently from other items.

Item perks? Yes definitely, also perks from companions like what Fallout had, really there should be plenty of different types of perks not just from your skills, it would definitely make some items more unique by giving them a special perk.

See: Skull Crusher, Scourge, Fists of Randagulf, and Eleidon's Ward from Morrowind. I'd offer an example from Oblivion...except that's why we're asking for unique hand-placed items to return in Skyrim. ;)

In Oblivion there was Fin Gleam... lol for some reason, through most of my play-throughs I would get that helmet, not that I really used it every time, I just got it because it was one of the few unique items that I knew exactly where it was that wasn't quest related.

yes ma'am! In terms of unique loot, one thing that I think was very well implemented in oblivion was the Uderfrykte Matrons Frostwyrm Bow drop. The bow itself wasn't SUPER powerful, but if you could slay her at level 1 it sure was a hell of a lot better than anything else you could get for the next few levels. I would very much like to see some more of this kind of thing :)

Sounds great to me, unique reward for explorers to find in random places. Id be happy even if they werent any bit better than what youve been using when you found them but maybe give them a unique skin/small magical benefit etc

Guess you know what I mean  maybe just a translation issue on my site meant: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/829/snap2tu.jpg/

Nevertheless I have to agree with you every TES Game should be more oriented on Morrowind Itemisation, if not there will be mods which will fix that issue later. :toughninja:

a set of equipment supposedly used by the champion of cyrodil that closed oblivion gates and ended the oblivion crisis.
one item per category of weapons. armor could be a set of imperial dragon armor with special properties inaddition to enchants.

how's that for unique?

Agreed, more unique treasures ...and hopefully unleveled.

Nothing like clearing out a dungeon in Oblivion and it be like "here is a bunch of crates with spoons, yearn, and a rusty iron shield, congrats."

A few of the more unique weapons I'm making will be added to the realy realy rare loot lists, so you may just happen upon them in a high level locked chest. So you wont find a whole bunch of dremora all weilding Zelda Master Swords, but you may find them in a chest.

"what the hell? This ones got a candy cane?"
"Well they cant all be winners can they"

I like unique loot, but I really hope they won't take random loot out. I like some weird treasure every now and then, like the glass armor with 50% chameleon effect.

One of my favorite things to do in Morrowind was to go artifact hunting, I wish to do the same in Skyrim : )

I care more about interesting and challenging boss fights than the unique items in game. That said, yes I would like to see more.

I remember building my set of Daedric armour in Morrowind, it gave me a sense of achievement because it wasn't easy to get. I hope they do this with the armour sets in Skyrim becuase in Oblivion every Man and his Gran had Glass or Daedric armour.... kinda svcked tbh.

Hope your listening Devs. make us work for our armour sets and don't just hand them to us like in Oblivion!

Of course i want more rares and uniques. Especially for stealth. Uniques for stealth characters in OB were too few, or to be precise, it was just the one Dark Brotherhood uniform, once you got it you pretty much wore it till you finished the game as there was no variety

Lots of unique items, but not too much to make them common. I loved finding powerful stuff around the world in Oblivion

We now travel into one of the elder scrolls major unspoken weaknesses. Being someone who likes his weapons and Armour unique, the previous elder scrolls games never really came up strong in those fronts.

You searched a huge dungeon, only to find more rusty swords, and calipers. While I certainly like the mundane of elder scrolls games, I think that there should be a far better item system in place. I think that really unique items within reward areas, like at the middle of the dungeon or on a interesting enemy, should be hand placed. However most people really desire loot that's not quite so plain.

A large part of what made modded oblivion something of a benchmark, was all the improved level lists. And even THEY where not random. Just far more diverse.

In games that have had a constant flow of different loot, the attachment to an item was NEVER less because it was rare to find anything. You grew attachments regardless.

Now, don't get me wrong. I don't want my bethesda game to turn into diablo 2.

When you have a dynamic game world, that works on complex ai systems, random things happen. Since oblivion, bethesda has always had really interesting little things happen within the game world. This level of unpredictability has blown me away time and time again, with fallout, they added specific random moments. That mentality, needs to cross over into items, we WILL grow attached to them. But more interesting items, just allows us to be attached to MORE things. Since our minds automatically deduct what is best. And therefore, we more things, more often. Exploring 20 dungeons and finding one rare blade and 200,000,000 clutter items won't make the game better, it wont make the sense of reward feel more significant when it does happen. Maybe in demons souls, because that game is all about limiting enjoyment. But not in elder scrolls. Please. Please. Be the most diverse you have been.

I doubt it will happen, but I would like to see single gloves/gauntlet items. So I can use my current Oblivion char setup again. A mage using touch spells, with a dagger/very short sword for parrying with, wearing a gauntlet on the dagger hand for protection.

I have to agree as that's one thing that I wished Oblivion had more of. I only have one major problem though with rare and unique hand placed loot, I don't want high powered items being found at low levels. The only solution is to make the area an Old Olney type area where you will be killed instantly at low levels and even that can be exploited with Invisibility.

Using Invisibility isn't really an exploit, an exploit was like in Morrowind when you engaged the Umbra and then ran back to Suran and upstairs to the rooftops and then killed him with a bow/magic to get the Umbra Sword.

The locations of the loot in Morrowind were placed well, most required some exploration and even some "skill" to acquire the different rare and unique items. Also they were not in places you would think to visit straight away on your first play through as a low level.
