I have had the same issue since I bought it (American launch on steam)

I'm using:
Acer Aspire Laptop
Win7(64bit) w/ 4gb RAM
ATI Radeon HD 4570 w/ the 11.5a update that's specifically says it is for Brink.

I've tried updating drivers, disabling triple-buffering, re-installing the whole game (takes hours), verifying files, restarting the computer, etc.
I saw on the Steam forums that some people have had success by getting the 11.5a update to their ATI drivers or disabling triple-buffering, hopefully that will work for some of you.

My brother has an Nvidia card (and slightly better specs) and his game works fine.

Im am also getting my game start, show the Bethesda rectangle, then back to desktop with a brink icon displayed in the task bar for a few seconds then gone.
I bought the game via Steam (i am in those forums also scouring for a fix).
I have done all of the things suggested also :( checked drivers, reinistalled, reinstalled dx etc

Would be nice for some acknowledgement that some one is aware of the problem and working on it.

Win7 64
8 gig ram
Nvidia 460 SLi

I have installed brink now on my toshiba satellite laptop which didn't quite meet the required proccessing power it has a 2.2 ghz processor but the game does load and is extremely jumpy so it is pretty much impossible to play on there. I have since installed it to my more powerful desktop computer which is inbetween the minimum and recommended requirements and so it should therefore work. But it doesnt. Im getting the same thing as you guys i click the game it comes up with the brink box thing it dissapears then a box flashes on screen and after waiting a few seconds the windows error box comes up. Im so annoyed that i cant play the game after preordering and the fact that my ps3 broke during the psn outage. this game needs to be fixed soon or im selling it.

For anyone who is having a problem starting up Brink....

"Now this is speculation, but try it, whats the worse that could happen"

This is mainly for ATI driver types.

I got brink last night at 2am - Downloaded it fine, Started itup Fine! No hiccups - Everything left on default settings (Which include High etc etc)....

Now my specs are :

2.7Ghz gigabyte Mobo / 3GB RAM DDR2! / Radeon 4650 1gb.....

Now - Make sure you have CCC (Catalyst) installed on your computer.

Now my problem was - When i ran the first challenge (Note, that on menu screen i get 70+FPS) - When i went into the challenge - I was getting 35+ fps, (Which 35fps in this game, feels like 13fps) Its still very choppy - The coding is terrible - Really needs better optimizing. Anyways.

I noticed i was getting the "Grid lines" - But no where near as bad as ive seen on peoples, It was cope able.

So i thought "11.5a Hot-fix is SUPPOSED to cure Grid lines etc" - Wrong!

I installed 11.4 - 11.5 then 11.5a hot-fix - And i got the EXACT problem you all get now....Brink starts up the "Brink" banner screen - Then boom...crashes, screen closes, just vanishes.

I thought - I knew it. 11.5a Is terrible - Only recommended for 6xxx series.

So what i done was - Start > Control panel > Hardware & sound > "Device manager" - click Display Drivers Then right click on your card "Mine being Radeon 4600series" - goto Properties > Roll back driver!

This took me straight back to 11.3. Wallah! My game was working once again.

This doesnt excuse the fact that "You NEED a high end Spec PC too play this game!!!!!!" - The choppiness, jittery fps....Is unbearable - Especially against AI bots.

But i recomend anyone tries this, reports back if it works.

If not - Im sorry, Lets hope a patch comes soon!

If Brink is crashing when it starts, here's the best info I can give you on how to try and get it to work.

Uninstall Brink from Steam.
Clean out any video card drivers on your system, try using Driver Sweeper: http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/

For nVida cards:
Download the 270.61 WHQL drivers here: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

For AMD/ATI cards:
HD 6xxx series, download the 11.5a hotfix drivers here: http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/AMDCatalyst115ahotfix.aspx
For HD 5xxx series and lower, try the 11.2 or 11.3 drivers here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/previous/11/Pages/radeon.aspx?os=Windows%20Vista%20-%2064-Bit%20Edition&rev=11.3
or here: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/previous/11/Pages/radeon.aspx?os=Windows%20Vista%20-%2064-Bit%20Edition&rev=11.2

From Steam, reinstall Brink.
Browse to: Steam\steamapps\common\brink\directx, Run DXSETUP.EXE and let it finish.
There should also be a VCREDIST.EXE file in the Brink folder (possibly a sub folder), run it also.

Try launching Brink.

My Brink works again.

Installed the 11.5 drivers. The 11.5a version caused the crashing of my Brink.

the game runs overall better as with old drivers but still this game needs to be optimized in future patches!

Lucky you - I tried it again , went from 11.3 upto 11.5 etc - Nope, Now its still crashing.

Now my problem is - The driver wont rollback.

Anyone got any "safe" ways on how to revert back to 11.3 from 11.5 without having to wipe loads of dir etc.

Ive tried manually going through the 11.3 installs from websites etc - But it just stays on 11.5

Try using Driver Sweeper to clean out your video drivers: http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/
Then manually install one of the earlier drivers.

Not really lucky.

The game still runs like [censored] and is near unplayable.

Think i just can wait for some optimization from the developers or a hotfix driver for the HD5xxx series. :(

Here's the solution I found:

First I updated both my graphic card drivers (gtx460) and directx. That didn't work. So I understood that it wasn't about the graphics card. Then I read that someone could run the game with one of their soundcards, but with the other one the game was crashing.

To test this out, I disabled my soundcard (Asus Xonar D2) and then ran the game. And it ran without any problems of course, without sound. I created my character and then quit the game. Then enabled my sound card back on, crossed my fingers and ran the game again. VOILA... Now it runs ok, I closed the game and re-run a few times. It seems as though the problem is gone. Hopefully it is gone forever.

Maybe this could help a few people out there...

Well ive managed to get 11.3 Back in and the game is working again....

But sadly - it really is unplayable...The choppiness - FPS drops....twitchy glitches - Grid lines.....

Its all too much - It is true, you really do need a high end spec comp to play this game.

Im running Everything on Low - Shadows all disabled - Tweaks/commands all low everything.

I get 15-20 fps in campaign mode - Which is a shame considering i get 75fps on main menu - 45fps inside challenges (Obviously due to the maps being smaller and less going on).

But anywhere else - Its unplayable, and sadly i really dont see them bringing out any kind of fixed to "optimize" peoples FPS just by simple coding or patches.

You need a good high end spec Card 5xxx+ series - to enjoy this game to the fullest.

Which almost makes me want to cry cause sadly i dont have the kind of money to just go simply upgrade my pc - As i thought a 4650 1gb would have been more than sufficient on low gfx tbh.

So sadly i will wait it out for a couple of weeks - And if there is no luck or progression, i too will be getting steam credit back and purchasing another game.

Followed brink for 3 years and i feel a remorse & sadness overwhelming me known that it wasn what it lived upto be.

Well - Good luck to anyone else whos enjoying it, Have fun!

A 4650 should run it okay, this is a known issue with AMD/ATI video cards with Brink. Splash Damage and AMD are working on getting this taken care of. In all likelihood new drivers or a patch will be released soon to resolve this.

Hi guys. I had exact the same problem: brink was launching only on sidebar and after a while "brink stopped working"
I was trying a bit with my graphic card drivers (Gigabyte Ati Radeon HD4850) and somehow I managed to fix the problem for me!
So I clicked in my CCC to "look for new drivers" and I was redirected to this page http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx?src=http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1187563-brink-crashes-on-startup/CCC-CheckForDriverUpdates
my card wasn't produced by amd, but I thought to myself what the hell, I just made format c yesterday, so I have nothing to lose.
I filled all information and as result I was here: http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/radeon_vista-64.aspx
I downloaded Catalyst Software Suite 11.5 (first link, 85.1 MB size) installed it and... I lost avaibility to watch yt movies (green screen everywhere)... O.o
But I decided to launch game anyways and it works! I played first two missions, optimisation is a bit choppy, but game is playable.
About youtube videos problem - it disappeared after a simple pc reboot. Now both yt and Brink are working for me :)

I hope it'll help at least some of you, if not all... If so, give a plus or something to this post, so others can see it.

Ps. Is it only me, or every Brink copy has "Games for Windows" logo and uses Steam? It's kinda strange for me... o.O

Ps.2. My pc's main specification: Quad Core Q6600, Radeon HD 4850, 4gb ram

Games for Windows and Steam aren't mutually exclusive, so that's not unusual. If you're running Brink fine on a 4xxx series card with 11.5 drivers, count yourself lucky as most people are having issues. Also, AMD bought out ATI a while ago, the ATI name as a brand is all gone now. Drivers will still show up as ATI, but in general it's all being re-badged as AMD. I'm surprised you're not having issues with grid lines over everything. Expect performance issues to be resolved before long as Splash Damage and AMD are working to resolve the issue.

like I said - it was my risk, 'cause I had nothing to lose. About drivers, I downloaded earlier from Gigabyte site drivers but it didn't changed anything. Tho when I downloaded the 11.5 which I wrote about my CCC changed, so seems I am lucky with it... btw. still, game needs a bit better optimalisation. And about my advice - some ppl should try it, it shouldn't brake anything, it's not the hotfix someone mentioned earlier...

and btw. what do you mean that they're not mutially exclusive? What I meant was that when I see GfWL logo on box, I expect to need GfW account, not Steam, it was just a surprise for me, 'cause there is no steam logo on box (btw. I noticed that I had some similar problems some time ago with games for steam, but never with the ones that uses GfWL, dunno is it connected somehow)

Hello,

I am one of many Laptop-usersm wich have a good enough graphiccard to play crysis2, bfbbc2, bulletstorm, ......(more new games) and today i bought Brink, i was quite excited, due to some vids of the actual gameplay, even thought it was gameplay from xbox360.
So i wouldn't have thought, that this amazing game, just can't work on Laptops.......sadly i later saw, wich minimun stats are needed for the game (yeah my head exploded) and after quite a while of searching i found out, that about 90 % of the laptop-users just can't play or even start the game. I myslef can't start the game, i just click on the launch button, than see the brink symbol on my desctop and two seconds later it's gone and nothing happens. Now i would have to ask if anybody would have an idea, if there is any way to play the game on a Laptop

Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
Intel core i7
GeForce GT 330M
Version: 270.61
DirectX-Support: 10.1

I really hope that the developers finish the patch soon and make the game playable, I myslef am very disappointed, due to Bethesda and Splash Damage not even saying one word about the graphicproblems.

I just installed the game, but leaves a square logo on startup and then crashes.

I also read a few fixes but have not solved yet: (

this is my configuration:

CPU INTEL I7 2600K
MEM 8GB DDR3 1600MHZ
MAINBOARD GIGABYTE UD4-P67A-B3
VGA CARD NVIDIA GTX480 (270.61 DRIVER VER)
CORSAIR 120GB SSD
S.O. WINDOWS 7 PROFESSIONAL 64BIT
DirectX 11

I disabled the triple buffering in the Nvidia control panel, I run as the game administrator,I checked the cache of the game on Steam;

most do not know 'what to do!!

Great!
I was waiting for about 1 or 2 years for this game and then I can't even start it!
I think i got the same problem as you guys have. Very annoying.
Starting the game, window popps out for 0.5 seconds and then the message that Brink couldn't start...

I really hope they are working for a patch now, this can't be serious...
