Who has found the "easy" way to downtown?

Post » Thu Aug 26, 2010 11:08 am

There's an easy way to get to Downtown/Freeside/The Strip you can take straight from Goodsprings WITHOUT slogging all the way around by Nipton, up through Novac and by the 188 to get there. I've done it straight from leaving the tutorial and made it with NO problems. No worrying about Deathclaws in Sloan or the Cazadore nests on the road north of Goodsprings or the long slog around!

First person to get it right gets a free ice cream cone and a beer on me! :foodndrink: :icecream:

All you need is one Stealth Boy and a Powder Ganger outfit. (optional) Just get on the road and head East. Once you hit the Sky Diving place, head North. This is where you can either disguise yourself as a Powder Ganger or not. I do, just cause it makes things easier. Either way, kill them, sneak by them, or run like Hell. Just go North. You'll hit Sloan, the guy warns you of Deathclaws and all that jazz. Get through his little speech and continue North. I highly suggest you stay on the Eastern side of the road. That's the right side. Start creeping. Do not look at the Deathclaw that's by Quarry Junction. Ignore him all together. Stay on the right side of the street. You'll then come to an area where there a a few Deathclaws on the road. Now you use your Stealth Boy. Just don't run into any of them and you'll be fine. As you creep past them, you'll see a rundown building to your right and a road that continues East that goes by the Repconn Headquarters. Take that road. Once you're on that road, you're in the clear. When your Stealth Boy wears off, you're safe to stand up and run the rest of the way to the Gun Runners/Freeside area. Hope that helps.

EDIT: I should add that if you DO dress as a Powder Ganger to get by them, you'll want to take off that outfit before you enter Sloan. I'm pretty sure they will be hostile towards you if you're dressed as a Powder Ganger.

Ehh...I think everyone knows about this, run past the Deathclaws like wind, and you're good. Also, go to the soldiers guarding the big useless wall at Camp McCarran, they'll figt raiders and you can loot them!

NOPE! No beer or ice cream for you. it does not involve running past deathclaws. I have never been able to outrun one yet.

Well, not outrun them, I mean waiting on a cliff till they get pissed off at you and run in the opposite direction for reasons unknown, then you just continue on your way before they come back for a snack.

No stealth boy needed for my way. Where you gonna get a stealth boy in Goodsprings at level 1 or 2 anyway? I did it with a Varmint Rifle with hardly any ammo, Vault 21 suit and Suave Gambler hat. But you're right, you do have go get by the few gangers in that area, but you don't go through Sloan or near the Deathclaws.

Safe in the schoolhouse. Always one there, as far as I know.

The safe in the School House as the other guy said. I've also found one in an ammo box in Good Springs. Also, if you kill Joe Cobb, he'll have one you can take too. That's just the way I go to get there. There are other ways to do it. I do it this way cause it's extremely simple and I don't have to deal with anything.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. I modded my school with a complete makeover and actually use it as my primary home, but always forget about that safe, lol.

Between black mountain and deathclaw valley on the left side of the road from Neil's, follow the cliffs sneaking to the ranger safehouse then to the strip. A little stealth skill helps. Doesn't have to be to high though to get through. This work, I've done it a few times now.

My favorite way is to go to Hidden Valley. Once inside hug the fence on the right. Take the second opening. Kill a few Bark Scorpions. Skirt the Black Mountain Crater, maybe meeting Moe & pals, then follow the narrow canyon SSE. Try to get some elevation so you can snipe the Radscorpions. You'll come out by Helios One.

This is a fairly easy route; there's some combat but it's manageable if you are careful.

The problem with Scorpion Gulch is that at low levels, the Giant Radscorpions there are just as lethal as Deathclaws. You can't outrun 'em and you can't kill 'em.

EDIT: I should add that if you DO dress as a Powder Ganger to get by them, you'll want to take off that outfit before you enter Sloan. I'm pretty sure they will be hostile towards you if you're dressed as a Powder Ganger.

True, I made that mistake one time. I was able to get away from them without harming my NCR reputation, but I ended up reloading a save anyway, don't remember why.

Oh, you're so close you're glowing, lol. :icecream: :foodndrink:

Actually, the way I was talking about is THROUGH Hidden Valley easily just dodging the Bark Scorpions and down the ledge towards Neil's Shack. (I have been going ahead and waiting for his forced greet on the road just below.) Go back down the road a few feet and then up a little hill to the right, and follow the rocky area around the inner rim to where a dead NCR guy is laying. (You're pretty far from any muties in there, but I still sneak and keep a watchful eye down in their camp.) Anyway, there's a path down by the NCR guy to your left up the hill lined with bear traps, but you can avoid them if you don't have the repair to disarm them yet. (I usually don't at level 2, lol.) Just find each trap and side step it and go straight up the path and over the hill towards ROBCO and you're home free! Coming back you have to get to the higher level and work your way down to the path that leads back to Niel's area.

The best thing I've discovered with this route is that it's easily repeatable in both directions and there's no combat to waste your ammo on this early.

Well, I know it’s beside the point, but it doesn’t really take all that long to go the “long” way, providing you don’t stop and screw around along the way. No serious opposition either.

Anyhow, if you stay up in the hills, I've made a straight shot to the city without running into too much trouble.

Well, hell.
I never tried to climb that slope with the traps, come to think of it. Assumed there would be an invisible wall.

Oh, and after using Scorpion Gulch 3 times with little trouble, I just got swarmed there last night. Don't know if it's patch related, but I'm not as enthused about it now.

I'm gonna try your way today. Exploits are fun.

Just tried this.
I endorse this method.

On one of my characters I found a way through thats very easy.

Go from goodsprings up that road in back hugging the left side and run down the hill between the cazdors and the other pack of cazadors being careful not to agro eioher bunch. Head down the ravine to where you can see red rock in the distance. Now run ne being sure to keep hills between you and the deathclaws and run between the packs of deathclaws and right up the road out to vegas.

But I alwats go the long way anyway.

This is pretty much all there is to it. Also don't look back. I did it by switching from run mode to sneak mode in various places, and head for the light of the lucky 38 tower obviously. Also try to do it at night. Really you just have to use your instincts and react quickly when someone or something starts chasing you (e.g. try to lose them by breaking LoS or in rocky or dense terrain that you can jump over but they have to go around, etc.).
