Last Stand at the 188:
Decided to play a melee/explosives character, determined to just use those two classes of weapons no matter what, and at third level I decided to do an end run for Vegas, the long way. Thought I would just hit Primm, Novac, the 188, and end up at Gun Runners, then go back to Primm and pick up where I left off. Then I would have the hotel room in Novac, access to good merchants, and some fast travel freedom. Grabbed Chance's Knife to have a little "edge", so to speak. So I make it to Wolfhorn Ranch without an issue, and find a large caravan at the overpass heading north, and decide to tag along. Strength in numbers, and all that. Now, I had scavenged some NCR trooper armor and because it was the best armor I had, I was wearing it, and we ran into a group of Legionnaires. I'd forgotten about the armor. I thought I would just, you know, stand back and let the caravan deal with the Legionnaires, then I would loot the survivors. But one Legionnaire charged me with a machete, and in a gut reaction, I swung back. Boom, HATED by the Legion. Didn't think much about it at the time, just thought, well, I'll get back to neutral with them when I get the Mark of Caesar. No big deal.
Further on, near Ranger Station Charlie, we run into more Legion, and the caravan gets wiped out in the fight. I press on alone, armed with Chance's Knife, 11 frag grenades, and a bundle of throwing spears as my best weapons. I run into four Legion Assassins just outside Novac. The fight is over before it began, me backpedaling lobbing grenades, and them turning me into swiss cheese with their SMGs. My ragdolling body is really all I remember. Reload. I pass that spot again, and there's no sign of the Assassins. I think, whew... I'd only run into Assassins one other time, in about 200 hours of play, so I thought it was over. I was wrong.
No caravans in Novac, so I move on alone. The four Assassins were waiting for me as I approached the El Dorado. This fight, if possible, was quicker than the first one. I had no cover, and the SMG fire was withering. Ragdoll. Reload.
Now I'm paranoid. I move north again, clutching a frag grenade and constantly scanning in front of me and to the sides. The Assassins are no where to be seen as I pass the El Dorado. I press on north, and finally get to the 188 Trading Post. I go to the arms merchant and buy some reinforced leather armor, three frag mines and one frag grenade. When I come out of the bartering screen, I hear automatic fire in the distance. I turn toward where Veronica hangs out, and I see tracers flying over her head. [censored]. Here they come.
The four Assassins came from the east. The Brahmin and the Destitute traveler were the first to die, I think, and I saw Michelle drop, and Veronica run away. There were two NCR troopers on the far side of the north bridge, and they opened up on the Assassins as they crested the ridge. I was thinking "cover, have to use cover, my only chance". The Assassins went after the troopers, and I stayed on the south bridge, lobbing grenades at them. The arms merchant opened fire, and it drew two of the Assassins over toward where I was crouched. I popped a psycho, a jet, a turbo, a med-x, and a few sarsaparillas, and charged them with Chance's Knife. This part is a blur of red, VATS and flashing blades, but when it was over, I stood over their bodies with about half of my health left and bloodlust in my brain. I can kill them. They can die.
The NCR troopers were dead by now, and the Assassins came around the other side of the bridge to get me. I downed a few more sarsaparillas and filled up on more drugs and turned to meet them. One of them had a super sledge. Are you kidding me? The rest of the fight took place around the tent, me running around it trying to only fight one of them at a time. Thankfully they were heavily wounded. The last one, the one with the sledge, finally fell to my flurry of desperate swings.
Michelle, Alexander, two troopers, the arms merchant, the Destitute Traveler, two Gun Runner Guards, one Mercenary, Samuel, and the Brahmin. Dead. Veronica and the Forecaster were the only ones left alive.
But the loot was excellent.
