BoS NCR Truce : Fallout: New Vegas

I love the BoS and I really want to continue NCR missions but the NCR mission is to destroy the brotherhood of steel which i dont wanna do. I heard there is a way for them to have a truce. How do you do this

Do all the missions of the BoS, don't remove the guy as the main elder. Once you've done all the missions they will ask for a truce with the NCR

I assume you only get that option if you're doing the NCR quests too?

Of course, I haven't talked to McNamara again after completing Still in the Dark (he told me he needed to prepare for something and wouldn't open dialogue).
