Should AI wait forever for a response?

Post » Tue Sep 21, 2010 5:00 am

Let's say a bandit catches you on the street and demands for you to hand over all your equipment... You do not respond for a good while... Should the bandit attempt to take it by force after forcefully ending the conversation or should it be like previous games?

This also works out to anybody your in a conversation with, but if the person is peaceful then they'll just walk away..

What do you think Post and Vote...

Sometimes it is kinda weird when you just stand there choosing an option and you go to the toilet or something and when you come back they just stand there like they have all the time in the world waiting for you to respond... so it would, in my opinion, be more realistic if they just walked away or that they attack you as in your example, although I don't think I would want it in the game, just because it would get annoying...
I rather stand a bit of unrealism instead of reading my options and they just walk away...

They shouldn't wait for ever, since conversations happen in real time now. But it shouldn't feel as if there's any pressure to answer quickly.

We have dialogue in real time and they say the npcs will mind their own business while talking, so I assume if their business is to take your money, they'll try and take it before you answer.

This is like waiting a minute and not answering..

This is an interesting question.

We already know that when conversations happen, people don't zoom in with 'tunnel vision' like they did in Oblivion, they carry on doing what they were doing. Talk to a Blacksmith and he might continue hammering on his anvil and so on.

So, it will be interesting to see how the AI handles things when we decide to go off and make a cup of coffee. My guess is that they'll just go back to doing whatever they were doing before. But it would be cool if characters that don't like you decided to attack or try and take stuff from you.

It would be funny if...

Blacksmith: Hows the weather?

You: (Making a cup of coffee and not answering)

Blacksmith: I asked you a question God Dammit (tries to kill you)

Its a game, not real life. While cool and immersive at first, this would just get annoying after a while and thats not good gameplay mechanics.

While I agree it's stupid considering they just stand there forever waiting. But it's a game. You need time to read your dialog options, decide, plan things out, etc.

It's harder to pick what to say when the words are chosen for you. If the player could literally speak to the NPC's in their OWN words (Which will never happen) then we could also go as far as to make the NPC's impatient and such. But not now.

AI shouldn't wait forever so long as I can pause the game. If not, I'd prefer they wait. Voted Other.

Don't see why they'd wait, since the entire "world pauses during conversation" mechanic has been removed. It's been clearly stated they'll "go on about what they're doing" while talking, so seems to me if what they're doing is robbing you they'll get on with it if you don't hand over what they want quickly enough.

It would be funny if...

Blacksmith: Hows the weather?

You: (Making a cup of coffee and not answering)

Blacksmith: I asked you a question God Dammit (tries to kill you)

You left off the final part...where the person it happens to, who cheered about the great and wondrous immersion improvement of the new system, comes to the forums and starts a thread about NPCs attacking them because they don't respond quickly enough "restricting their roleplay" and starts slamming Bethesda for...giving them what they said they wanted.

They could have the NPC say things like "Well? I'm waiting!!" or "I'm losing my patience..."

etc to show that they are bored. other games have done this

obviously i knew that the world doesn't stop anymore.. your reason trying to say that the game doesn't stop in conversations has nothing to do with my statement... read before responding..

Well I think there is can be timeout in such cases, if some one want to pause game better hit ESC or pause button then do it during conversation, but there will be another question, will NPC continue conversation if there is enemy near or aggression will take over and NPC will run away as well if NPC was attacked during conversation does he will continue it even enemy strike him?

Leave the option to further the conversation in the hands of the player, it should be like a twix commercial where you've got all the time you need to think.

The poll wasnt very well thought off . . . considering how you worded the thread title and the poll title i guess some people may not vote for what they think theyre voting, making the sample inaccurate
