What is he holding in the background?

It looks like a short sword in the left hand (On the right side of the screen) and some kind of stave in the other, but I'm not sure.

Looks to be a shortsword and half-hand sword.

lol... I hate how people say dovahkiin like it's the name of the character.

Dovahkiin is more of a description than a name - like 'outlander' in Morrowind.

well, in the theme song, they dont say "the dovahkiin, the dovahkiin" ...so i think its ok, since the signature character doesnt have an official name.

its a title, dragon tongue for "dragonborn", but still... if he has no name, may as well just call him "dovahkiin", like in the song.

the only reason people dont call the nerevarine just plain "nerevarine" is because we have the name of the person it originated from... nerevar.

The theme song is stupid.

I mean, who's to say the player's character is even going to be a he? I always play as female characters.

Considering that Elder Scrolls games are supposed to give the player total control over who their character is, I think the whole concept of Dovahkiin hasn't been thought out very well at all. Oblivion had it spot on by making Martin Septim the central character, leaving the player-character completely unknown. Imagine how much it would've svcked if they made the player-character be Uriel Septim's heir instead and revolved the story around that? That isn't far off what Bethesda are doing with this Dovahkiin crap.
