Just HOW Smart will the NPC's Be?

Post » Thu Nov 25, 2010 9:20 am

In Oblivion, the NPC's weren't very smart. They reacted negatively towards the character if we picked up their possessions, but we could jump up on their table, run all over it, knock everything on the floor, and they, seemingly, wouldn't even notice.

So, how is it going to be in Skyrim? Are the NPC's going to be more aware of actions like this? Should they be, or would that be too annoying?

Thoughts?

It depends on how much the AI has advanced over the last 5 years. I think it will be an improvement over Oblivion but there probably will still be problems with the AI.

I'm sure there will be some improvement in how NPCs interact with you, but i'd guess they still won't react to you knocking all of their stuff over, etc.

The main AI improvements seem to focus more on how NPCs behave in their daily routines.

I'm inclined to agree. Not because of technical issues, but because of how annoying it could turn out to be. it wouldn't be very fun to get arrested for bumping a cup by accident.

So smart that they will become sentient and take over the world.
Joking aside, Im sure Bethesda will vamp up the AI.

The AI doesn't really "advance" over the years like graphic cards. It depends how much time and resources you put into it...

Indeed. Even if it just made NPCs dislike you, it would get annoying... especially if stuff is as easy to knock over as it was in Oblivion.

Seeing NPCs react when you bump into them might work though.

According to http://www.gameinformer.com/games/the_elder_scrolls_v_skyrim/b/xbox360/archive/2011/01/17/the-technology-behind-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim.aspx, NPCs will react to you knocking their stuff over. Also, they won't react negatively to you picking up and eating one of their apples if they like you well enough.

Im guessing they'll be some what better than fallout 3's AI(sneaking and looking at an item would catch their attention) not all that much but a little is enough, plus with the new radiant story the NPC's will seem smarter due to the RS pushing their actions.

Seems like Beth has molded the Radiant AI to how they wanted it on Oblivion. NPC's have a lot more things to do now. I'm interested to see how the crime system works as well as the dialogue system. If a guard is chasing us, we can't engage in conversation with another NPC and freeze time anymore. I'm thinking we won't be able to talk to anyone while being pursued by the law.

there are tools to make making advance AIs simpler, also people who work on making AI programs and selling them to companies to use and to be modified, so in that respect it does advance.

It's their world. I say let them take it over. Oh, wait, you mean our world?

Ai's got to be a royal pain for a game like this. I mean, think of all the things we can do to the npc's and all the things the need to do even if we don't interact with them compaired to an npc in a shooter. So even if its just a small improvement over FO3, I'd be happy.

Macgyver in Skyrim?

In terms of conversations I'd rather scripted ones, like Fallout 3 (e.g. Moriarty abusing Gob etc.) so at least they make sence

Agreed, the NPC's in oblivion were having conversations about to different things, it was like watching to people talk to the air but were facing each other and then when one person says goodbye, wow they start another conversation out of a sign off lol

It was said early on that they will. If you knock their stuff about, they'll get annoyed and like you less. Also, if they know you well and like you, they won't mind things like eating food from their house, or picking stuff up and moving it around a bit.
