I dont think so (in response to the topic title, not the "has this been asked before") 99% martin WAS the last of the septims.

The reason I'm asking is that I've started a new playthrough of Oblivion and are noticing that the emperor and Martin are refered to as dragonborn.

The Emperor as in the Septim line of Emperors? He could be, though it's unlikely because the line ended with Martin. He's dragonborn, as the Septim line was, but also keep in mind that a majority of the blades were also dragonborn.

It's just a rare characteristic, but not THAT rare.

Also in Skyrim's timeline we don't know who the Emperor is. After the Oblivion crisis, the Empire fell and Titus Mede took the Imperial City, creating a new Empire, though it seemed very weak with only control of the Imperial City. We'll learn more about it and how it sustains/falls in the next book.

They are, i still dont think the two are related though, i think the story behind how your character is dragonborn is something Bethesda is saving for you to find out in the game.

No, you are unrelated to the Septims.
Although you could always roleplay as a descendant of Martin or something.

Source?

The dragonborn are the chosen of the Aerdra given the soul of a dragon and able to speak their language you don't have to be in a certain family to have it but just be chosen at birth.

Martin and the Countess of Bruma had a thing

Seriously though I hope it is explained how you are dragonborn in a way that doesn't make you facepalm.

It's possible, but it depends on what Beth does with the lore. I personally sort of doubt it, but there just isn't a whole lot on the subject at the moment. The only notable "dragonborn" is Tiber Septim, and it's never really made clear if that's meant as a description or just as a title. In either case, in the earlier versions of the lore, "dragonborn" was just a name attached to Tiber Septim. Then it was expanded out to anyone of his bloodline (eg. Martin) for Oblivion. It might still be limited to his bloodline (though that would complicate things), but I think it's more likely that "dragonborn" is going to be treated more as an exceedingly rare trait or as a fated thing, sort of like being the Nerevarine in Morrowind, rather than as a matter of heritage, just so that anybody (that is, any character a player might play) can and will be "dragonborn."

Well, I must be dragonborn and have a dragon soul as I can speak the dragon language. FUSH RO DAH.

Being dragonborn is a trait bestowed by the gods and it just happens to be heritable. That doesn't mean that the player character of Skyrim is or even has to be related to the Septims. Tiber Septim was made dragonborn and he passed that trait on to his descendants. The gods can give that trait to anyone of any race.

The majority of blades were dragonborn? I was completely unaware of that. Do you have a source? I would really like to read it especially because I know that the point of the blades it to protect the dragonborn. Why would they protect themselves? :P

Well its not to hard to imagine that Tiber was getting busy with other races ifyanowutimean. Dunmer are also already part of the bloodline.

Botton line: any race can be dragonborn.

Oh, and the Blades are not dragonborn; they protect the dragonborn. The group traces its origins to the Akaviri Dragonguard of Reman Cyrodiil, hence the reason why they use akarivi katanas.

i doubt it very much as you have the choice of race to play with and I can't see an argonian or khajiit being related to the emperor
