question of curiousity, does Internet exist in Fallout unive : Fallout Series Discussion

probably not, and probably this topic is dumb to ask anyways.

but i wonder though, during the tranquility quest, the failsafe clearly shows the email that Dr.Brawun received, but does that mean there is a thing like internet where the computer users in fallout universe can communicate each other and networking, etc.

Definitely not. Terminals are the closest things to computers, and they are definitely not good enough to support Internet. I doubt Cable still even exists to support Internet connection, it suprises me that they still have radio in the Fallout Universe.

What computer networks we do know of seem to be fragmented and propietry. Amongst others, We're aware of PosidoNet, owned by the posideon oil company, to which the Enclave had links... Suggesting contental, if not global links. Satelite communication was also possible, and the vaults had a network for monitoring, and tactics suggest they had an intended internal communication network too that "Went dark"

There was no Internet, just private, corporate networks like PoseidoNet. Vault-Tec probably had a similar network as well.

It's kinda like the old Compuserve network at best (anyone out there remember Q-guides?) and more like some dumb terminals on a local network in general (if they are networked at all). If you ever used a Vic-20, you can kinda imagine the computers we are generally dealing with.

"internet" in Fallout world would prob look alot like the earlier BBS networks, like the ones i used to visit during my C64 years.

In LOB Enterprises you can read Emails, so I would actually assume maybe a primitive Internet.

Emails don't imply an internet, just a network of some kind. You can send email over an internal network with no internet connection.

Vault 13 has the "Interweb", which the Vault Dweller can kill time on. I assume it's similar in some way. Probably 70's style Arpanet.

IIRC thats just a "Learning terminal" in the library he spends time on - there's no mention of Interweb.

I'm positive there is. My character was in Vault 13 only recently, and I was trying my science skill on every terminal I could get my hands on. Interweb is definitely mentioned.

EDIT: AHA! I knew it was there! (I couldn't replicate it in-game, unfortunately)

On other hands, NO, besides the internet, the vaults use only one "internet". It is called Intra-vault mail. Look on every terminal and in every vault and it will say on the screen, INTRA-VAULT MAIL!

I stand corrected. However the vault network is internal only - the FT:BOS' story indicates the inter-vault network went dark.

That's basically what Arpanet was. So in a sense, the internet does exist, it's just 300 years or so behind ours.

Apranet was specificaly an experiment to create a packet switching network. There were other networks before, and after it. I would not be suprised given Fallouts tendancy to have small "terminals" and very large mainframes if we were looking at a simple master-slave or hub/spoke topography, not a "non-centralised" like Apranet.

Apranet was not an "internal Network" for a single organisation. Apranet linked other networks controlled by different organisations. very diferent things

Huh. I always thought it was just a military network. Whatever. The point is, there's net in Fallout, in its most basic, ancestral form.

No, there's a network - Networks existed before the internet/apranet.

APRAnet's first four connections were at 4 different universities - UCLA, Stanford, UC Santa barbra and University of Utah. Although it was a military funded project, the intial nodes were not military facilities.

Given the low-def monochomatic rendering capabilities of the terminals I assume there would be no porm videos or pics. But chat based virtual six is an option if you had access to the few local networks. Ever wondered what those Brotherhood Scribes were actually doing before you peeked over their shoulders and their monitors showed only a boring menu about vaults or liberty prime's status? :hubbahubba:
