SKSE?

Though admitably, I was reluctant to use Oblivion Script Extender at first, since I wasn't comfortable with the idea of needing a third party program to play the game at all, but once I actually used it to play some mods I really wanted that required it, I never made in install of Oblivion that didn't have it.


Similar experience here. I avoided it for a number of years because installing some third party executable that messed with Oblivion seemed kind of hinky. :)

But then, I finally ran into mods that I just had to try. And I've been using OBSE (and FOSE) ever since. No problems. (well, no problems with the script extenders. But they did allow me to use Oblivion Graphics Extender to somehow mangle my last install of Oblivion. That's what I get for trying some of the fancier shaders with a not very fancy GPU. :D)

Sure I would like to see a script extender in Skyrim.

Without MWSE and OBSE, many great mods would've never been possible to make.

Do you realize that all changes that OBSE does are entirely in the RAM, don't you? That makes OBSE more harmless than any existing mod, or unofficial patch. Even the Morrowind Code Patch (which you haven't mentioned) should concern you more, as it patches the MW exe directly on disk.

Yes, I'm fully aware of the technical aspects of how it works. I've always been a little paranoid about computing. I didn't run MWSE for the first time until I had read through all of it's source code and compiled it myself. MWSE was originally an external debugger while newer versions of it and OBSE use DLL injections to hook into the game. And in both cases the techniques were chosen to specifically not modify the executable only because changes to the executable are officially prohibited.

A program is very different than a mod because it can modify not only the game but also other things on the computer. I do use those programs but it still makes me slightly uneasy to download programs from unknown sources so I don't have any trouble understanding why some people don't want to use them. Running any program has some element of risk.

I've been gone the whole night. So, sorry I couldn't answer some questions on why I hated OBSE.

The main reason I didn't like OBSE was that I had to open Oblivion through a third-party program. Also, there were not too many good mods that required OBSE. Sure, there were a handful of good ones. But none of them were worth using OBSE. :shrug:

Yup. As I said, changing the Oblivion shortcut is really traumatic. And seeing how a little popup window open up and then shuts down a few seconds later is traumatic as well, too.

I'm glad that at least you speak in past tense. Hope you've realized how nonsense are your statements.

it was more complicated than that for me. I quit rather than go through, not because I was lazy just because I did not want to get into learning about it at that moment because I was just casually installing mods. I will learn how to use it soon so I can finally get that crossbows mod.

Make sure you've Oblivion patched to it's latest version (1.2.0416). Unzip it into "\Oblivion" (NOT "\Oblivion\Data"), replace your Oblivion shortcut with an obse_loader.exe shortcut, and forget about it.

I think it would be quite nice if the native game code came equipped with a plugin loader. I'm sure there will be some things that it would be useful for.

I'm also 100% certain there will be a Skyrim Script Extender. Modders always find new things they want to do that the developers didn't consider. Of course, ideally, the developers will see what OBSE did and implement all of that functionality in native form.

Fearing DLL injection from a known and widely trusted source is nothing more than extreme paranoia. The only legitimate reason to be against OBSE is if you're using an Oblivion distribution where doing so is impossible, like the D2D version.

This thread is a bit silly. If you have paranoia then that's your problem. But hoping that an extremely useful tool which opened up a sheer endless amount of possibilities for Oblivion modding (and made a lot of mods possible that I couldn't play without) will not be available for Skyrim because of that is pretty weird and selfish. If you have the unfounded fear that a script extender will make your computer explode then don't use it. :shrug:

That's a legitimate reason not to use it. There is no legitimate reason to be against it.

So why the hate then? If you didn't want any mods that used it how does it even remotely affect you? Unless you really though installing OBSE (changing a shortcut, and dropping some files into a folder) was that much of a problem.
