Facing a very strange bug (good description inside)

Post » Fri Jun 18, 2010 8:45 am

Hi all,

1) My bug: Animals now appear on my Fallout "radar" (thing at the bottom of the screen) as yellow bars (which means my games now considers them as allies or neutral).

2) My environnement: I have no mods installed. Playing on PC. I think this started when I discovered Wolfhorn Ranch. I did not level there and I don't think I got any kind of perk that could mess with animals (I'm lvl 9).

3) Things I have tried and that did not work:

I restarted my computer.
I restarted the game and loaded an earlier save.

Please help me !

That's not a bug. If it can move, it's on the radar.

And yeah those birds are annoying.

What, specifically, do you mean by 'animals.'?

Snowy has it right; only birds and the occasional domesticated dog are friendly (unless you are identified as being with that faction.

If you are finding other animals reading as friendly, the only explanation is that you took the Animal Friend Perk.

EDIT:
I stand corrected. I forgot about the friendly Big Horners and the Brahmin. All life forms register on the Pip-Boy

Even those special 2 headed cows are now on my map: I don't think it was like that before ! No, I do not have the Animal Friend Perk.

There are animals in the game that are friendly, and thus show up as yellow on the compass/radar. There's even friendly mole rats, along with the more common brahmin and dogs. Nothing really too worrying or problematic about this.

Animals at towns, farms etc are often non-hostile. Crows are always non-hostile and can confuse the hell out of you on occasion. Wild Bighorner calves can be non-hostile even though the advlts in the herd are hostile.
I've not met many hostile Brahmin bulls at all, except around the Mole Rat Ranch.

My Compass and other display items are set for green like FO3 had.

I also see yellow on occasion on my Compass. Since green and red make yellow, I assume there's a Friendly and and Enemy in the same direction although they can be at different points because of Perception. I don't know if this explains it...it needs to be investigated by heading in the direction of something yellow. I haven't done this myself yet. :)

Did you do anything to increase your Perception? I have noticed that things show up on my HUD long before I see them in game so I notice more Enmies/Allies as I walk along. Not sure if this was something that got tweaked in a patch, or if I have not had my Perception that high before.

Green and red DO NOT MAKE yellow. Yellow and Blue make Green, but that's it. on your compass, yellow (or whatever color your default HUD is) means friendly and red means hostile. If your tickers are different colors than your HUD, then it might be a visual glitch.

We're dealing with Light and not Paint so:

What color does green and red make?
In: Colors

The area of your eye that detects color is called the "cone". Your cones are specialized to send the messages for "red", "blue" and "yellow" to your brain. The absence of red is green, just like the absence of white is black. Thus, under normal conditions, there's no way to combine red and green. However, there are very specific conditions that cause your retinas to receive both a "red" and a "green" signal and send both signals to your brain, resulting in "reddish green". Doing so is difficult, one has to flash red and green in quick succession before the person trying to see reddish green while trying to keep that person's head very still so not to disrupt the illusion.

When you blend red light and green light of equal luminance, they cancel out. Since most forms of light contain RGY, most people see yellow rather than white when this "cancel" happens. The reason why green and red paint turns brown is because you've overloaded the paint with pigments, it's absorbed so much over every color that it can't display yellow or white, but your eye is canceling out either the red or the green (as well as the blue or the yellow) because you can't normally see both at once.

If this answer I found is not correct, I apologize. The next time I see a yellow tick on my compass, I'm going to head straight for it. :)
