He meant like an in-game ladder, and not a loading screen.

Thing is, Beth has always had problems with ladders.

No, Todd mentioned they could never get the animations right for climbing a ladder in real time, so they only ever had ladders take your through loading screens. The OP was wandering if we would finally get to climb ladders in real time.

Load screen. Apparently Bethesda isn't very good at ... ladders

LoL.

Let's hope they've actually learned to do ladders like everyone else in the gaming industry already has for decades back

Maybe if they can find some decent animators.

If CoD can figure out ladders, I'm sure that Beth can figure it out.

They could run up them like in the original Half-Life and I wouldn't care. The real problem is probably the AI - assuming combat is more or less disabled when you're on ladders, what happens if you shoot a fireball at an NPC? Should they jump off, or continue climbing all the way to the top? Does it really matter when they can just run off of the platform in a fraction of the time?

ANY animation for ladder climbing would be acceptable for me EXCEPT things like counterstrike where it looks like they're running in place... but VERTICALLY..

I have been collecting old PS2 games. Got Mark of Kri yesterday. It had lovely climbable ladders which added to the gameplay, among other nifty features. http://youtu.be/iNXZRHRG3xA

Lol = Lots of Ladders

It just doesn't work right with their engine. And for the people saying that everyone else has gotten it to work. I've only seen a few games with real-time ladder climbing that isn't a cutscene, or have them actually using the ladder. (Ex: CoD, you just float up with the ladder or there is a bad animation) (Ex 2: Halo series, you just float up with the ladder, their is no real animation)

I don't assume that Bethesda would willingly put in a bad ladder animation if it isn't absolutely necessary. Better to not do it at all and be ridiculed for it, rather than doing it poorly and taking more ridicule for it.

I honestly find it hilarious that BGS can't do ladders.

Did Beth's design notes look something like this?
Awesome revamped character art across two genders and ten diverse races - check.
Vastly improved character animations and dynamic, unscripted battles against huge flying dragons - no problem.
Massive, hand-crafted fantasy gameworld with advanced snow and water effects, hundreds of dungeons and unique landscapes - confirmed.
Some of the deepest, most unique and characterful lore and in-game literature ever created for an RPG - done.
A huge cast of fully voiced NPCs and a powerful but subtle dynamic quest system - check.
Full-featured Creation Kit software released to fans for free on or shortly after release day - confirmed.

Ladders - TOO DIFFICULT. Use loading screens again.

But yeah, I'd like to see this. Ocarina of Time had ladder climbing...

Being a new engine, not stopped by GameBryo's limitations in AI, I guess they should be able to do it now. :P

Gamebryo had nothing to do with the ladder part. Gamebryo was only a renderer engine. Nothing to do with AI and whatnot...

Ladders not working. That's on Bethesda's part. They even said it themselves. They're bad at it :sadvaultboy:
They've previously not been very good at ... animations, so I'm guessing that was where the problem lied. Animations seem much better now so I have big hopes for ladders :)

Yeah! And Pokemon has ladder climbing too!
So, since an older game has had it, there must be climbable ladders in skyrim!
