Not being able to fast travel to cities until they're discov

Post » Thu Jul 01, 2010 7:36 am

I'd love it, hell I'd prefer it.

... wait a minute, this is how it will be done. It was already confirmed.

It was, I didn't hear anything about that yet. I'm hoping that's the case though.

This how Shivering Isles and Fallout worked, and if you could FT to cities before you visit them, carriages would be useless.

I know it was mentioned in the same sentence carriages were.

Yes, I'd like to not being able to fast-travel into ANY point of interests that is not yet traveled to. In Oblivion, we can let it slide somewhat, with the main roads are supposedly being well developed and well guarded, it being on one of the most prosperous province of the Empire or whatever. But in my harsh, rugged and unforgiving lands of Skyrim? Hell naw.

Also fast-travel should not be really safe unless it was along the main route between the main cities or something.

Of course, part of that is because some amount of the "starting" quests (like, joining the Fighters guild, or the recommendations to get into the Mage guild, etc) were in cities far away from the start of the game. Not that this was good design or anything, but it certainly had to be a factor in allowing people to, for example, FT to Anvil right off the bat.

(But like I said - it wouldn't have really been much different if there'd been "carriages" in Oblivion... you'd need to explore a couple dungeons or do a couple quests around the IC first to raise some cash, but then you'd have been able to just carriage out to each city.)

Nah, I believe it worked that way in Fallout 3 and NV because you were actually discovering the places or at least some of them, in Skyrim there is actually a lot of people that know where the towns/cities.

Sorry if I explained it wrong but I don`t know how else to word it.

it'd work better for the story (IIRC you were smuggling yourself into Skyrim from Morrowind)

You shouldn't have to be rich, but you shouldn't be able to do it right from the start. Get to know the area first, do some quests before you move on. That's the way I see it anyways.

Maybe do quests for the driver?

Guys what do you feel about fast traveling only between discovered cities and big villages (and serious points of interest, like inns)
This way when fast traveling to somewhere you are automatically dropped in closest inhabitable spot to go on foot from there
I play Oblivion this way and it really makes game more interesting and realistic (also slightly longer :) )

Its already confirmed that fast travel is only for places you have been while carriage travel can bring you places you have not.

I never fast travelled to cities in Oblivion until I had visited them first, but i'm curious why people would want the ability taken away. It's fairly unobtrusive and no one forces you to use it if you don't want to.

I think exploration before you can fast travel is good, so it's cool that that is the confirmed method. Although the discovering might get tedious on successive play-throughs.

BUT:

I imagine there are maps in existence, yes? So it doesn't make perfect sense that the entire land is undiscovered for your character. He'd look on a map and find out where the other major cities are.

I don't wanna travel like a trust fund baby anymore..

running through the brush and along the shores should provide quite a few lengthy and epic battles with mudcrabs :D

Thats how I played Oblivion, I enjoyed the roaming the wilds in that game more than the main quest.. Then again, I enjoyed just about everything in OB more than the main quest.

It'd add to the sense of achievement, having discovered the cities yourself.

^ This is exactly why I'd like to be forced to discover even the most major of cities. This would be so great! Not to mention the experience of actually exploring to find the major cities...

Yes, that was Oblivion's problem with fast travel, actually.
