IDTech5

Post » Tue Jul 06, 2010 7:05 pm

I don't want to sound to excited but to me it is obviuos that Skyrim will user IDTech5 engine as they also belong to ZeniMax and this engine top notch at the moment. As you can see in alot of demos from IDTech5 engine it can handle huge outdoor environments as well as interiour with an amount of detail that is mind-blowing...

I don't really think that they use another engine, as Gamebryo is outdated and CryEngine is not from the ZeniMax group. It is just obvious IMO.

No, they still use Gamebryo. Zenimax bought Id after Bethesda had started working on ES V, and you can′t just change engines so easily (look at Duke Nukem 4ever ;))

That it belongs to Zenimax doesn't have to mean that the Bethesda developers want anything to do with it. They've been using and upgrading the GameBryo engine for years - they're extremely familiar with how it works.

No

A while ago Todd was quoted in an interview saying that they are developing a new engine for the next title (which we now know to be TES V) -"that was designed to support open world RPGs"

Just to be clear, TES V will not use idTech5 based on what Todd Howard stated in the article linked by Miaximus. Here is the relevant quote from the last part of the article.

Bethesda Game Director Todd Howard explained in a separate interview with IGN that his game would not use id Tech 5. The studio's new engine built for its upcoming title is more beneficial to creating huge, open-world games, such as Fallout 3 and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, while id Tech 5 is better for more contained environments.

"We decided to really reboot our technology after Fallout 3, so we had been making plans for that and started doing some things. The id thing came along later, so it's a mix of that plus the kinds of games we do are a bit bigger and more dynamic.

"Id Tech 5 is the best thing in the world at doing a very static environment that looks pretty and you're going to run through. But for the kinds of things I like to do, I like the world to be more dynamic.

BGS is using their own engine, which has been dubbed the Creation Engine.

Edit: Nevermind. Just realized someone bumped an almost 6 month old thread. This is back from the announcement.

Question is was the guy browsing through the whole of the 405 pages of the forum and found this, or is this a sign that the Rapture is indeed coming before Skyrim gets RELz'd??

Look at the dates of the posts you're quoting. Someone bumped this thread from December 12 of last year.
