Boone the Kleptomaniac

Post » Sun Aug 15, 2010 5:38 am

So I just recently got Boone as a follower & went straight to the REPCONN rocket factory. On the way I encountered some ghouls and out of nowhere Boone starts shooting them with a PLASMA RIFLE! I did not give him anything so he seems to have stolen a plasma rifle for himself. (Later on I checked his inventory & he had another lol)

So... What has Boone stolen for you during your travels with him?

I don't know if any of my companions have ever picked anything up. They have only used what I have given them, if they have enough ammo for it.

He once stole the All American from one of the Vaults Armoury's this earned him a timeout and he was forced to wear formal wear.

All companions will occasionally pick up weapons (particularly during combat) if they're in reach and the weapon does more dmg/dps than what they're using. Some people seem to experience it a lot more than others, tho...it's only happened rarely for me. I suspect a lot of the time you/they just aren't in the right circumstances for it to occur.

One time at that camper spot near Searchlight, where you get a small ambush, I was attacked by the usual bandits that show up PLUS a squad of PO'd Legion. Boone was hiding/sniping from inside the camper...there was a tiny break in the action and he ran out of the camper, stood over one of the Legion corpses, stooped & picked up a 10mm machine gun and starting using it. The funny thing was that the corpse only had a tiny bit of 10mm ammo (I guess) so Boone fired it a couple times then hollered "EMPTY" and switched back to his default rifle.

And yeah, companions love the All-American. :)

I've only had Boone as a companion for about 2 hours and he's picked up 10mm pistols and smg's a number of times.

Boone doesn't steal anything for me. I steal things for him. And he gets pissed off about my clepto.

He always takes all the legion loot i want, ill be walking around not looking at him and then he pulls out a cowboy repeator or trail carbine.
He only uses it if he finds ammo thou.
And he did steal the All-American from me while in vault 34 which made me look the vault up and down again....

100% fixed Guass rifle after we barely killed off half a dozen brothers of steel guys, used weapon repair kits and another guass too, all at level 12 mind you... Before Boone the clepto "lost" it I remember seeing him drop the gun in the middle of a fight then pick it back up and continue firing. I think he only picked it back up cause he saw me take notice ;)

He also stole the All American, so now he's running around with a Mini-Gun... Now try and snipe them..

When we get to the Vault 34 Armory, I head straight for it and the first thing I do is give Boone the All-American and ammo. A happy companion keeps me safer. :)

Raul picked up an Incinerator while we were in Fiend Territory and during the fight he was blazing away. He got a little wild and set ED-E on fire though. I made sure to stand behind him.

Tonight I took Benny out with a grenade and then saw Boone pick up a machine gun from one of the Chairmen after he punched him silly. He didn't have much ammo though. I'm not sure I'm keeping that save; they killed everyone in the Casino and I want to gamble...will play with it some more tomorrow. :)

Hahaha.....one of the pure goof-off things I've been meaning to get around to is GECK out Boone's default weapon & perhaps raise his explosives skill, and then give him nothing but frag grenades. I think it's so hilarious when he starts lobbing them all over the place. He's even tossed them up towards high targets (like cliff ledges) and blown them to pieces.

But yes, you have to stay well behind a companion when they're doing it! lol

He stole and then lost my Holorifle and Automatic Rifle.. he charged into combat with them, a Legion trooper sniped it out of his hand, it glitched and flew into the air and did'nt land, the same thing happened to the holorifle after the AR was lost... GWRABUGBWJANHA

Uh oh, Boone's been carrying Annabelle for me forever and I gave him 2 missiles to see if he'd use it but he never has. I guess he's just too happy with the All-American. It's hard to keep that guy in ammo though. It sounds like a machine gun when he shoots. :)

He swiped a machete and a 10mm SMG while traveling with me. So I bought him a bunch of 10mm ammo, it's cheap anyway. When we go Legion hunting later on, I'll get him a nice Machete Gladius to have fun with. Or maybe another good melee weapon like Knock-knock. My philosophy is take care of your follower, and he/she will take care of you.

Also, I let the Van Graffs get blown up, then swiped a bunch of combat armor, and got some sunglasses for myself. So now Boone and I are dressed in identical black armor, shades, and red berets. Only way it would be cooler would be if the berets were black and if we both had the same gun.

This is why I only give my companions a Melee or Unarmed weapon now. I let them use their stock gun and perma-ammo as I got tired of constantly having to restock them. I remember one stretch of road that I swore I could roll down on all the bullet casings Boone left behind. These guys just don't understand the concept of "Make every shot count"

I stood behind Boone and watched the casings fly so I know what you mean. He got every last baddie though. The ammo search doesn't bother me so far; he's worth it. When it does, I'll just let him use Oh Baby...he loves that thing. I'm closing in on the end for a second game and I've been trying different weapons with the companions. It's been impossible to keep Cass stocked with .12ga ammo too. Raul on EW has been a bit better. They're all pretty flexible and carry multiple weapons. Maybe that's why I don't catch them picking up very many.

He usually steals the All-American, but that is the only thing I've ever seen him take. He fires that thing faster than a minigun though, it's impossible to keep him stocked up.

I've been doing some informal 'testing' using Boone and it appears to me that they take weapons only when they're in combat mode. I can dump a gecked-out, massive-tweaked weapon at their feet and he'll ignore it completely until an enemy comes in range. Then he makes his angry face and immediately runs to pick it up before rushing to attack. If I dropped ammo next to the weapon, he didn't pick it up, only the gun.

I'd assume they would pick up stuff within a certain range while in detection/attack mode (haven't tested range yet). This strengthens (in my mind at least) that one reason some don't see this behavior very often is that for whatever reasons, playstyle keeps 'combat alert' companions too far away from dropped weapons most of the time.

Since there are some enemies in the Armory, it's likely they dash in and pick up the AA when fighting them off.

LC, I'm thinking a mod to get Boone to locate and gather his own ammo would be AWESOME. Like Rex finds things maybe? :D

Loving your 'testing,' great info.

Haha, that could be a useful mod if it's possible. ;)

I know they'll pick up the tiny bit of ammo from a corpse at the same time as the weapon, if the corpse has any. I'd guess because a corpse is a 'container' and thus they can grab both in one swoop. It was just when the ammo was lying separate that he seemed to ignore it. So he'd grab weapon but then not use it because he had no ammo. It's possible if the combat lasted a while he might go back and grab the ammo later - didn't test that either. Combats usually don't last very long. :D

I wanted Veronica to use a gun instead of melee or unarmed but everytime I turned around she had a lead pipe or something someone dropped, very annoying.
