The Good, The Bad and the Preatorians

Benny. No matter what you will think about him, I find him extremaly charming and killing this guy would just not be my style (and he is imprisoned right now anyway). My character, being a paragon, obviously wants to forgive and release Benny after what he did. So everyone knows the story. Two stealth boys, bobby pin, instant loss of reputation with Legion, handful of quests failed and loads of blood and limbs in the air. I did not find a solution on the internet or this forum other than wiping the entire legion camp in order to save one guy... What just doesn't sound right, because how could one, level 18, courier wipe out entire Legion stronghold? Why then NCR just didn't send few Rangers, since its so easy... Well so I did and headless body of Caesar was sitting on his throne. I talked to Benny afterwards and was pretty surprised when I couldn't initiate conversation. "What are you doing? These Preatorians means business!". Benny, I just killed them to save your sorry...*cough, cough*... and you're talking about some "business?". Let's give it another go. Let me reverse pickopocket Benny and give him a stealth boy and bobby pin. Nothing hapenning? Maybe he'll use it in the arena fight then and confuse the guards somehow... Nah, what was I expecting...? Perhaps they go sleep at some stage?

Now, the Benny quest appears to be unfinished or bugged, obviously. I was always pretty sure that "sneaking out", as Benny said, involves some stealth and discretion but here I have a bunch fanatics chasing after me for realising one guy. WHY giving us this option if it is not even working properly?

Question... Or request of the day. Sure, I know Benny won't make any appearance in the game after I save him. But I don' t want to lose a chance of working and trying to understand Legion a bit better. Is there a possibility of a patch... Yeah, official patch that will actually allow player to help Benny sneaking out of there without Legion becoming hostile? Hey, look, Benny would make a great central character for the future DLCs anyway! Antagonist or even character companion, but in order to he must be alive anyway.

Lesser question: Anyone knows is there any mod that will not turn Legion hostile towards player and Benny after helping him? [edits: woops, it's supposed to be praetorians...]

Maybe you need to change your style  cause anyone that shoots you in the head and can double cross anybody at the drop of a hat has earned a hole in the head.....an no I haven't seen a mod like that.

LoL, don't hold your breath waiting...
Benny is an idiot and plays hardball - live by the sword, die by the sword - so he must perish.
I should have crucified that testicle, but I faced him one-on-one in their Arena. It was an honorable death (and he was pretty gung-ho about it...)
Releasing him is a dumb thing to do, but go ahead and take the whole Legion on if you wish!
However, the devs do always allow you to make inappropriate choices if you feel you're prepared to face the consequences.
But I believe they wanted to make it very clear that releasing him is ill-advised...

Pickpocket maria, then shoot hm in the head when his hands are tied. Now if only I had khans and his suit.

I just get the legion safehous key, then slowly leah of the legion, taking any gifts they give. Then put c4 on caesers throne. Wait at the safehouse and kill the vetreran who I assume is frumentari, kill him as he sleeps, or just put a mine down whatever I feel liek at the time. Then go into cottonwood coves hills with Boone, kill pheonix (after haning legion plans to ncr), move up to the fort kill Caeser (detonate c4) then kill every praetorian, and kill benny. Only people left alive are slaves, benny and the kids who I cant kill. Then mercy kill any crucified people.
If Only I could use that camera to take a picture of me sitting on Caesers chain with limbs everyhwere, that should go on my wall in the 38.

Play a game that doesn't take place in a violent post-apocalyptic Wasteland?

I hear that Hello Kitty gamecube game seems pretty rad.

All joking aside, how can you forgive someone for shooting you in the head for the chip? He could have just bonked you on the head and taken the chip, instead he mocked you and shot you in the face, what is there to forgive?

I freed Benny but roleplayed that he was so scared [censored]eless from my Courier that he'd never do anything to me again. I also punched him and shot him a bit while he was captured before letting him go :spotted owl:

THANK YOU. Benny is charming, perceptive, and intelligent. Shooting you was business. He didn't want you tracking him like you did since you survived. I wanted Benny to live, I wanted to rule with benny, but no. It's bugged or fixed so that you can't. >=|

The guy betrays you when you agree to work with him, he's basically a back-stabber to any who intrude on his plans.

In all honesty, I can see some of the sympathy towards him. But it can only go so far; since this guy really is 'traitor'. Especially in every part, he seems to be caught up in his dreams of ruling New Vegas as he makes it his own personal busniess paradise.

And sure, let's COMPLETELY disregard the fact he sent his goons to kill you in his suite.

Not only does Benny shoot you in the head to get what he wants, and leaves you for dead, (at least he gave you a semi-decent burial) if you intimidate him into going to the suite with you, he sweet talks you into working with him (or, at least, tries...), and once he has your 'trust', he leaves, and again sends goons in to kill you. Not exactly the type of person I would want for a partner.

Pre-Release I imagined him a pragmatic person that has a sense of honor, I thought I could forgive him for that little.....problem in the beginning. But honestly, even if you intended to work for him and try to help him rule Vegas, he only betrays you again.

It would be interesting had they let Benny have a shot at being owner of Vegas. But, C'est La Vie.

Unfortunatly, NV screws the pooch a bit with neutral pacifist playthroughs.
We were told it was possible but hard to do so.
However it actually is damn well insane due to how the quests and system is set up ( thats not in difficulty just story and quest lines ).
I played a run looking for a perfect balance, figured out which factions to help when and which to hurt to keep everyone balanced and non hostile.
In the end it came down to the same old Yes man route and the same ol' Legion hunt, followed by NCR hunt.
On a full pacifist route I'd have had to ignore almost most quests as well.

Honestly there is no way to avoid PO at least one side, and non com's are pretty much left with disguses, companions and KO equipment.
Disguses are of more use to sneaky assassins than smart pacifists.
Companions tend to be there to shot things ( not pacifist just a loop hole ).
KO equipment generally just gets you shot more, by bad guys you can't avoid.

You could ask the same question of a lot of other things. Passive/aggressive mod for followers still doesn't work IIRC, and that was hyped up prior to the game's release.

Even if they changed the encounter to work right, he still wouldn't live. According to the G.E.C.K., he was actually supposed to ambush you one final time if you put all the effort into saving him.

From the dialogue topic "VDialogueBennyFreedAmbush", with all dev notes intact:

{ambushing the player while using Stealth Boy}Thanks for getting me outta that cage! Now for once will you just {emphasis, player's resilience is vexing}lay down and stay down?
No one rules Vegas {'cept}except me, got it? You're a lowdown gofer! You deliver mail!
How ya like being Mister Good-Two-Shoes, hey? How's it feeling?
How ya like being Miss Good-Two-Shoes, hey? How's it feeling?

So it seems that he was always intended to die, really. :(

Lesser question: Anyone knows is there any mod that will not turn Legion hostile towards player and Benny after helping him? [edits: woops, it's supposed to be praetorians...]

Not right that I know of. I'm currently working on one that lets you hire him as a full-fledged companion, with 2/3 of the recruitment options NOT involving pissing off the Legion (one involving his delaying the use of a Stealth Boy until AFTER you leave), but I don't have a release date set on it.
