- Superior blocking capability to a one-handed weapon (But not shield). You have two hands to maneuver the weapon into position and take the force, more leverage to migitate the blow, a longer surface area and thicker cross-section to catch the blow against, and your weapon itself has more inertia to absorb the blow.
- Greater reach and threatened area than a one-handed weapon, allowing you to keep someone with a much smaller weapon (Such as shortsword or daggers) at a comfortable distance.
There should be perks that allow Two-handed Sword users (as opposed to axe or hammer users) to acquire the following advantages: - Greater reaction time in switching between offense and defense. It doesn't take as much effort to lever a two-handed sword's blade to a defensive position as it does a one-handed weapon because of the larger surface area and greater leverage (Unless you're mid-power attack, and the blade is retardedly far from the body.
AND/OR - Chance of making an enemy recoil when blocked, by using the greater mass and surface area of the weapon to catch the enemy's weapon, and forcing them backward.
- Ability to half-sword (Hold the sword by the blade), decreasing reach but slightly increasing attack speed and greatly increasing defensive ability.
- Ability to reflect certain ranged spells by smacking them back like a tennis pro.
Axe and Hammer users could get perks that have more pre-emptive defenses, such as greater stagger, reach, knockback, or attack area. 2-handed swords should be excellent on defense, if not quite as defensive as Sword and Board. Axes should be about WTF damage, and Hammers about shutting down/gimping enemy combatants.
And I agree... skill does increase damage delt, as you start using the weapon more effectively. There are a lot of fine adjustments and maneuvers that can be used to increase the severity of a wound, and/or bypass protective measures.
