Real Darkness?

Post » Sun Aug 22, 2010 3:28 pm

I've always been fine with the light level in Oblivion & Fallout 3 - I frequently turned to the in-game light sources (torches, enchanted "Light" amulet, pip-boy lamp) to see things more clearly; and while I've seen the "more realistic dark" mods for Oblivion and Fallout 3, the sample screenshots of them have always looked like nothing I'd ever want to experience.

While I would like some more realistic darkness, having a single light source in a large enclosed space is enough to see almost anything. At night outside a single light source can enable you to see several yards/meters. I'm not talking a single match or like a cell phone light, but a realistic torch.

One problem I do have is finding actual photo evidence of this, hopefully I can provide something to better explain...

I live where moonless nights are VERY dark, so I expect nights in unlit areas in my games to be very dark. If you can see and find your way on a moonless night (or in an unlit interior cell) without a light source, . . . it is too bright and not at all realistic. But the darkness/visibility is quite different on different monitors, so users end up with very different night visibility. I have a large, bright monitor, do I added mods to OB, FO3, and FONV to make my nights dark enough.

You can adjust your brightness in the options, but that does not solve the other issues:
1.) Torches were not bright enough (it range was very short) in Oblivion (the Pip-Boy Light was too dull in Fallout)
2.) Oblivion had a lot of unnatural light sources to light your way in dungeons and caves.
3.) The NPCs and Creatures detected you nearly as easily at night as during the day. If I can't see them (in the same lighting conditions), they shouldn't be able to see me. (With the exception of creatures that have better night vision).

If you can see clearly in caves, forts, ruins, etc. it is quite possible that you monitor/television is improperly calibrated.

Well the vast, vast majority seem to think this is a problem, so maybe your monitor/television is just incredibly dim.

I doubt that "vast, vast majority seem to think this is a problem". These darker nights and pitch black mods seem to be more of a niche than anything.

The few mods I've used that don't include any lighting in their dungeons tend to just be annoying. If they are going to make these beautiful looking dungeons, I want to see them. Otherwise you end up just walking around with Nighteye on all the time making the darkness pointless in the first place.

but then you could always just use a lighting spell and your darkness would be pointless....
I dont think making things even darker will add anything to the game, because of the 2 lighting spells. Just add a little darkness to make it feel real

That's true if you are a fighter type, but a rogue won't have an aura of light around him, makes sneaking very difficult. Much like in FO3, using your PipBoy light made your spotted easier. Us rogues would use night eye, and sneak up on people. If you didn't want to be sneaky, you could use torches, or light spells/nchantments.

Secondly, that would at least make the light spells useful. I never used them in Oblivion, other than to raise alteration.

One thing that has really bugged me throughout the series (granted, Oblivion improved it, but nowhere near enough) is the light levels. They have always been far too bright. I've never once needed to carry a torch. Not once. Ever. I would like to suggest that we have certain caves with a 100% darkness, and no light sources. I think this would make rather interesting gameplay. In http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=8367 mod, I created an ancestral tomb with 0% light, and running around with the faint light of my torch was great, if I do say so myself.

And for the caves/ruins that do have light sources, I would like to see them stand out more. Create "patches" of dark, with well placed torches. Let enemies hide in the shadows. Let ME hide in the shadows. Let me remove torches with telekenises or a Thief inspired arrow, to move along the path undetected (other than a few NPC's made suspicious).

Create shady taverns and prisons with low lighting. This could also be introduced in castles. Have well lit throne rooms, but have corridors sneak in-able.

I also enjoyed the light effects that came from Morrowind's plantlife. And I believe the wilderness should be significantly darker. When I'm not in a town/fort/camp, I should struggle to see without a torch. I would like to be ambushed by bandits preying on the roads. Forget the chameleon effects of sneaking we've saw suggested, this, I believe, could vastly improve the abilities of NPC's sneaking.

I once installed "The Light Mod" for Morrowind. It has never left my mod list. Global lighting is reduced, light sources give off more light, I was given a Night Eye effect and greatly reduced sneak for carrying a light source and it improved my gameplay a lot.

I have always believed that lighting is the most important thing for visual quality. Without it, the game seems rather bland and uninteresting. Of course, players that dislike challenge always have the option to turn the brightness up and see everything always.

I play (99% of the time) Sneak/Assassin/Stealth oriented characters. I would love to have total darkness most of the time, or at least for appropriate situations. Having the games be darker when it would logically follow to do so would be amazing! lol

Okay, I probably should have said "the vast vast majority seem to notice that dungeons and night is unnaturally bright" but I've heard quite a strong following of the "make nights darker" cause as well.
