Post » Thu Sep 16, 2010 9:11 am

Todd has mentioned (and yes this is not new news) that alchemy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=En-3KsE02Oo&feature=related what are your thoughts on that?

Not making a judgment on these comments, but interested in what people have translated from this audio.

You took that completely out of context.

If you're going to use quotations, at least quote him correctly and in context.

It was over powered in Oblivion and Morrowind. You could pretty much make potions that would make you immortal. They're nerfing it, as they should. I approve.

Well it "doesn't matter anymore" can be taken out of context and used to create a divide. You know its going to be more robust so even if it "doesn't matter anymore" it will still be awesome.

Edit: :toughninja: so bad..you can see the throwing star wounds....

Way to TOTALLY mis-hear that line. He means that it doesn't matter anymore WHAT category a skill lies in, because classes have been eliminated. There is no more picking a combat/magic/stealth specialization, thus making it not matter what category it lies within. It could be in the cheese eating category for all they cared, because the categories no longer affect gameplay.

the context is in the audio clip I sourced, and I added the two words for the quote, sorry I missed them.

For full disclosure I voted No opinion. whatever they decide to do with it works for me.

In fact, Pete said Alchemy is one of his favorite things and he spent "many a lunch" brainstorming the new system with one of the devs.

WOAH WOAH WOAH.. I don't know how much skooma you drank but that is absolutely not at all what he said, and not at all what he meant either, listen again.

He meant it doesn't matter what nebula it's under anymore, but it is part of the stealth nebula now and not Magic.

"And alchemy we're treating as a....well, it doesn't matter that much anymore, but it is in our stealth category."

It doesn't matter much anymore because specializations are gone from the game, as we have already had confirmed. Like I said, it could be in the goat herding, cheese eating, and star trek fan category and not matter, because it wouldn't level any faster, slower, nor would it affect how someone could use it or level it. Specialization and classes are gone, so it doesn't matter where alchemy lies.

Later, in the same clip, he refers to alchemy as the "most magical of the stealth skills."

I suppose you could be right, that could be what he meant. Though I don't think it is, you have valid reason for believing so.

He's absolutely right. So is everyone else in this thread. Funny how we are all telling you the same thing isn't it?

The entire context of that 50 second clip is to describe the lay out of the skills. Not a single skill was described in power or what they were doing to balance or change it, so it doesn't make any sense that he would claim that alchemy "doesn't matter anymore.", especially in the face of them removing skills that they had considered to not matter, such as Mysticism. It wouldn't make any sense for them to design a skill that didn't matter.

Now, that isn't to say that alchemy hasn't been changed or alter such that its more balanced or balanced in a different way than previously, but if that information is anywhere, it certainly isn't in this clip.

^This.

Separately in an interview for German TV, Todd mentioned that there are some "really cool" changes for the alchemy system. Hopefully we will learn more during E3.

I remember reading somewhere that you can't craft on the road only at alchemy stations. Kind of like the fireplaces in NV.

I remember reading that too. I hope we'll have a portable mortar and pestle even if it means weaker potions.

Can y'all recall where y'all read that? I've read most everything stateside, and a few things UK side.

You don't have enough options. I think Todd is referring to a change in the mechanics of how alchemy works. It was switched to Stealth for a reason. I can only assume that this means you won't be hauling around clunky potion making gear, and alchemy will be more ranger oriented, making poisons and healing balms from your natural surroundings.

You know, I think you might be on to something!

(this is the reason I ask btw because some people will think and give alternative ideas)
