Spiders

Post » Fri Oct 01, 2010 9:44 pm

As someone with a really intense arachnophobia... I don't feel sorry at all for anyone that wants to do away with them... I think it's awesome to fight monsters that scare me out of my wits. Just tough it out a little... It might even help your arachnophobia a little. And besides, I can confidently say that if I can do it, anyone can.

Please remember the spiders is always more affraid of you than you're are for the spider, and with reason ...

If i have learnt anything from Dragon Age, Two Worlds, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings it is that this is usually not the case when it comes to Giant Spiders.

Reading some of these comments, some of you have no clue about arachnophobia at all. It's not a case of just being scared of something like a kid who's afraid of ghosts. A lot of people "don't like" spiders - that isn't the same. Unless you have severe arachnophobia, you really can't begin to understand what it's like. Even seeing a real spider can cause a serious panic attack. I would honestly rather cut off my own hand than be in the same room as a tarantula.

As I said above though, I personally don't find the spiders in Skyrim (from what i've seen) to be anywhere near detailed or realistic enough to make the game unplayable for me. I'll probably still mod them out, but they could be a lot worse.

Aracnhnophobia is a serious condition I know somebody who suffers from it its why I dont think its funny to mock somebody who has the condition. Like I said earlier this is a game for those who fear it and you can do harm to the spider in game.

Like with all things of these kind, the avoidance of a fear makes it get worse.
When you avoid any and all spiders, even animated ones, you are training yourself to have an extremely adverse reaction.
You are programming yourself to have a counter productive response.

What would be better is if you used the game to face your fears.
They are only animated ones, and you get to kill them in creative ways.
This way you could actually see some improvement in your condition and you are guaranteed not to make it worse.

What Im saying is, man up.

I am very arachnophobic and Giant Spiders on my TV screen really creeps me out, even just thinking about seeing one in the First Person mode gives me shivers. It really puts me off the game.

You should be safe if you stay away from their caves. You recognize them, they have webs. For the rest of us spiders are a welcome addition, they add a lot to the feel of danger.

It's simple, if someone can't handle something in a game then don't buy it. People that expect the world to cater to them are much more annoying than the people that disregard the fear.

Not really, I have no fear of spiders but I don't feel they add anything and I really don't like to look at them. They are fairly disgusting. I'd be much happier if like the other ES games, these were left out.

I'm not saying they shouldn't include spiders in the game just because of arachnophobes. Quite the opposite. I'm just saying that people who don't suffer from arachnophobia shouldn't be making stupid comments like "get over it" etc. It isn't a silly fear like being scared of watching a horror movie. Perhaps if someone stuck the barrel of a gun in their mouths they'd understand the kind of fear someone with severe arachnophobia experiences when they see a spider.

But as I said, this is no reason for spiders to be excluded from the game, especially when they can be modded out quite easily.

I once suffered from Coulrophobia ( fear of clowns )
My brother actually helped me by forcing me to play the last level of Batman Arkham Asylum where you kick the Joker's ass and that helped me because I could beat my fear up. My point is on Skyrim you can kill the spiders and take it from me that it will help.

I think that facing the spiders and killing them could help out your fears they need to be confronted. Aracnaphobia can be a dehabilitating condition but I think its best to face something in a digital relm where the thing you fear or have a phobia cannot bother or harm you.

Every time I see a spider crawling around my apartment, I always hide it from my arachnophobic roommates and bring it outside. I've never been bitten doing this.

As far as I'm concerned, spiderbros deserves a little more respect. :nono:

This should happen if, and only if, the same "remove it, it bothers me" option is available for every single phobia on http://phobialist.com/, bar none- not just for arachnophobics.

Spiders are beautiful, honourable creatures and devourers of flies.
I hate flies.
Spiders good.
Flies bad.
Spiders good.
Flies bad.

Yes but what fly has flesh rotting venom? I am not arachnaphobic, myself, but I don't have any love for the nasty, alien, multi eyed , eight legged freaks.

The only threads we've had on these forums concerning phobias have been related to spiders (but I would guess the people who fear spiders would fear other arachnids, as well), so... why should we help with all of those you listed? We've had many topics about arachnophobia and pleas to allow an option to hide spiders, but not any other phobia. I'm going to hazard a guess that in-game arachnids are the most disliked of all digital... anything, really, simply because of how many people seem concerned about it. Personally, I don't think allowing a setting option to get rid of them would be all too difficult and I'm sure an option for those with arachnophobia would be beneficial to more people than options catering to any other phobia. I very strongly believe that would be the case from what I have witnessed on these forums.

To all of you berating and picking on the OP for his phobia, get over yourselves and stop being selfish, inconsiderate jerks. I used to think these forums were generally more well-behaved than other internet sites, but sheer ignorance in relation to what a phobia actually is that I've witnessed across these threads are both surprising and infuriating. It doesn't make you look cool. If you disagree with an option to replace in-game arachnids with something else, that's fine, but you don't need to be a donkey about it.

I think you could actually have a fair bit of fun with this.
Think about it this way.
Super epic awesome hero of awesomeness who kills dragons like flies.
Who flips out and runs when spiders show up.
Additionally, you would definately feel accomplishment upon the defeat of the eight-legged bastards. I know I will. You'll also be able to help remove this fear of yours. Eventually, I would suggest going spider-hunting. See a spider, hunt it down 'till it's dead.

Arachnophobes [censored] about spiders in every game. I don't see acrophobes asking for a "no cliffs" option, or agoraphobes asking to teleport from one dungeon to the next and remove all NPCs. Deal with it or mod them out. Seek therapy so your irrational fear doesn't stop you from enjoying video games or getting something from the toolshed in the backyard.

Who the hell honestly cares? Of course the same topics are going to come up again and again. That's how forums like this work. Old topics die, new members join, discussions are repeated.

What's the alternative? People searching through hundreds of topics then necro'ing the ones they wish to discuss? Or the forum being dead because people can't come up with anything that hasn't already been discussed?

Think about it.

Nope. There are at least 15 being repeated ad infinitum. Not to mention ad nauseum. ;)
