Why there aren't any spears

Post » Sat Oct 23, 2010 8:50 pm

I agree with you on that one too, however, Todd did use that feature to solve a puzzle in a dungeon, kinda like how you inspect items for clues in LA Noire. That sounds pretty fun to me :D

hey I didnt say it svcked and you did say in your opinion, I just think within reason, there is no reason for tangible features in Skyrim none what so ever for Bethesda...

Good addition: Spears implemented correctly, which shouldn't affect the implementation of other weapons.
Bad addition: Spears implemented incorrectly, which might affect the implementation of other weapons (as time was wasted on spears).

I'm all for more weapon choices (which I think is already confirmed for Skyrim), but only if each is implemented correctly. See what I mean?

So if its implemented correctly?

Then you agree that it should be implemented, or at least would be lovely to have, if done properly?

We should have an asterisk next to every suggestion that says this...

I think it'd be great if Spears were actually in, but they never confirmed them. Just imagine, looting a spear and pull it out, seeing it rise in front of you on your TV/Computer screen.

Hell, I hope they do that for a lot of features, don't spoil it all Bethesda ;)

If they had their own animations, gameplay advantages/disadvantages, and perks. Sure. Why not? BUT, spears can only be thrusted (like blades, which have more uses) OR thrown (basically giant arrows, imo). So, idk.

Bethesda does not want to "polish" them

i c wut u did thur

There really needs to be less Computer vs. Console talk, and more Lusty Argonian Maid jokes on these "spear threads". I mean after all this IS the Bethesda forums, home of the "http://www.uesp.net/wiki/General:Fishy_Stick". (witch I never got :( )

I could be mistaken, but I don't recall them actually stabbing with those spears. I seem to recall them swinging them like a halberd or glaive, rather than thrusting.

And since polearms will be in...

I actually used spears in Morrowind for a while, until realizing that the weapon characteristics in that game made swords a better deal. I rather like them, they seem like the perfect backup weapon for a hunter when their bow goes kaput.

If there still aren't any in Skyrim at release I'll live...but I'll also mod some in first chance I get. And yeah, I'll likely have to be satisfied with them being classified as poleaxes.

That said, spears and crossbows do sound exactly like the sort of thing that might come in a DLC.

Also, at the risk of identifying nord with norse a bit too closely, spears like Gungnir were rather prominent in the mythology.

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Arena:Orc#Orc and http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Orc DID have Orcs. They just weren't a playable race until Morrowind.

Daggerfall had npcs with spears... http://images.uesp.net/9/9a/DF-Questgiver_KnoW.png they just weren't equipable 'till Morrowind... bad arguement you got there.

Why no spears?: Todd's Stone-Age ancestor was nearly skewered by a spear, thus, point-ed sticks were removed after Morrowind.

I guess I'll just have to wait for spear mods to get then back again, hopefully the attack animations are easier to modify this time, like if they had an actual stab or thrust animation for swords/polearms rather than just swinging 'em wildly at enemies. You'd think the Romanesque Imperials would have spears to form a proper phalanx in military campaigns in other provinces, but not a single one can be found in all of Cyrodiil or Skyrim lol.

Bethesda confirmed that there would be a greater variety of weapons in Skryim.

So as long as they live up to this promise by giving us function rather than aesthetics, I don't really losing spears.

I'm still gutted about it though. So much frigging potential in that, and limiting to not include them.

As mentioned spear animations would be complicated, in addition what skill would they fall under? They aren't blades and they aren't blunt.

There are two skills, Two handed and One handed. Spears=2handed.

Still everybody going on about animation? How hard is it to understand, that's not the problem?
And while I'm at it, spears in New Vegas aren't very good either, even the mellee ones work the same way as any other mellee weapon.
But whatever, people just want spears, it doesn't seem to matter in what form...
again ala making every object viewable in 3D in the inventory :teehee:

Which is easier, making a viewable 3D inventory, or balancing out a non-standard (in point of FPS games) weapon?

Daggerfall had npcs with spears... http://images.uesp.net/9/9a/DF-Questgiver_KnoW.png they just weren't equipable 'till Morrowind... bad arguement you got there.

That argument is about as valid than saying how some statues had spears on them too...

I'd rather they add http://cdn1.iofferphoto.com/img2/item/130/931/893/Utgk6VaPVB4D27K.jpg.

While I think if by some manner of miracle, or by pulling all their resources into it, they could make a distinct, interesting spear system, I would never see the same for flails.
Probably because, I have no idea how flails are supposed to work, and to do it properly, they should add in physics and whatnot...

I believe that they where taken out because fighting with a spear is not easy. A javelin you throw but a spear requires alot of advanced animation to look accurate. It's a spear you are fighting with, not a stick.

Edit: Minor spelling error

Is that gameplay wise?
