Take it slow. Do quests and build your character up a bit. And whatever you do, don't go north at first. You'll have your ass handed to you at lower levels.

And remember that most things don't level directly with you. If something is too hard, nothing is going to change. You should avoid seemingly impossible situations until you can handle them. And you can always lower the difficulty if you're stuck.

This game kind of herds you along a preferred path right at first, starting by going south out of Goodsprings. And if you stray too far from that path, you will be quickly overwhelmed by enemies. There are no leveled lists of enemies in New Vegas, and creatures and armored human enemies have damage thresholds your weapons have to overcome before you start doing real damage.

Go south and stick to the roads, at least until you've leveled up some, improved your skills and gotten some decent weapons and armor piercing ammo. Once you've reached New Vegas for the first time, it gets a lot less linear, as you'll be able to quickly accumulate enough caps to buy decent gear.

Follow the Main Quest. Do Side Quests as you find them if you think the time is right to do so. Level up, level up, level up for the Perks and Skills.

concentrate on the main quest first, take note that there's a big difference regarding doing side quests in new vegas compared to fallout 3, in nv, whatever side quest/action you do, your rep affects a certain faction. so don't be confused, take things slow, understand the factions and of course enjoy. you're out in a roller coaster ride in Mojave.

Talk to people, read what they have to say - New Vegas is a lot about story-telling ... you can play the game like a simple 'shoot them up' though i guess there are a lot more better games for that kind of fun. The different stories in Fallout are rich and thick and give you choices some of which are _really hard_ to make.
There are not a lot of clearly bad guys in the game... though whatever appeares as a red marker on your PipBoy compas will NOT talk and wants to be either avoided if possible or killed.
Save a lot and use different save slots so you can go back if some choice you made later turns out to be not of your liking...

Know your weapons, mods & ammos. Once you've mastered these, the game becomes a piece of cake (except the occasional Deathclaws). Tip: Pick up the .357 magnum revolver & the long barrel mod from Chet at Goodsrping general store at the start & things get a lot easier.

Be careful and don't take on too many enemies at once. While you're learning the game's environment and threats, stealth and long-range shots are preferable to charging forward with a sledgehammer.

Do not underestimate creatures who seem docile and unthreatening. Bighorners can be a terror if you let them within striking distance, because their attacks knock you down. Giant Ants, while rather weak on their own, are usually encountered in large groups that can overwhelm you with sheer numbers, especially at the El Dorado Dry Lake where the dust impairs your ability to see them approach.

I would suggest that on your first playthrough you choose Guns for weapons, get yourself a nice scoped rifle and a big shotgun or SMG for close-in work. Other weapon classes may be a bit more challenging for a beginner.

The main virtue of the .357 is durability; even with Built to Destroy, revolvers and other Cowboy guns degrade very slowly. But in most early came combat situations, a 9mm pistol in good repair will be better than even a modded .357 because of the sheer speed of fire and reload.

All the advice above is good, it will set you up for the first few games.
Once you learn the system and its quirks, and you follow the main path a few times.
You should have good knowledge of what you're capable of and when.

So for the first few games take it slow and follow the main quests.
After a bit when you get to a place called NoVac the game opens up and even following the MQ can take you to many different side quests.

Take it however you feel comfortable. try doing side-quests in an area, then move on when you're done. if you get stuck, try something else until you can make it. I made it to freeside by level 4 by getting there as fast as possible. if you follow the eastern highway all the way up, you won't run into too many enemies. you'll meet a few near novac, and again when you're going north, but nothing you couldn't handle if you take your time. (if you're having a tough time fighting enemies, find some other enemies and get them to fight each other, and they'll leave you alone long enough to escape)

Save and save some more, then save one more time. I would recommend NOT taking sides at Goodsprings. The game wants you to side with Ringo, but wait first. Go to Primm and check things out there. You can then go back to Goodsprings to do the "game tutorial" and set things in motion.
