The importance of eleven

Post » Mon Feb 14, 2011 5:30 am

They probably chose it because as it's 11.11.11 it stands out as a date of significance to us and will stay in our minds, plus a date that's three consecutive numbers does increase hype build up as opposed to one that's three seperate numbers because, again, it sounds important and significant.

It probably has some sort of significance, otherwise why would they specify the exact release date almost a year before release? But at the same time, revealing the release date is asking for it to be missed.

It has something to do with http://www.nvisible.com/1111/1111Doorway.html. The release of Skyrim will prevent its closure.

The most direction correlation to the number I know of is the Psijic Order's 'Eleven Forces'.

In Mundus, conflict and disparity are what bring change, and change is the most sacred of the Eleven Forces. Change is the force without focus or origin. It is the duty of the disciplined Psijic ["Enlightened One"] to dilute change where it brings greed, gluttony, sloth, ignorance, prejudice, cruelty . . . and to encourage change where it brings excellence, beauty, happiness, and enlightenment. As such, the faithful counsel has but one master: His mind. If the man the Psijic counsels acts wickedly and brings oegnithr ["bad change"] and will otherwise not be counselled, it is the Psijic's duty to counterbalance the oegnithr by any means necessary [emphasis mine].

Well, the most obvious connection is with Remembrance Day / Armistice Day. I'm guessing that this isn't a strong association in the US, judging by the reactions here. I'm somewhat unsettled by it though. This is the day in which a large part of Europe & the Commonwealth countries observes a minute (or 2) of silence, at 11 am to remember the dead of WW1. It seems a tad ... insensitive? ... to release on that day.

It's probably the number of Adoring Fans you come across your travels; each having been killed in some other way.

This is probably completly unrelated/random, but in Norse/scandinavian viking age, the number 12 and 11 has a special role. The number 12 is used to describe a gang of berserkers that is complete group. This is used in much of the litterature and mythology.

11 however, is the symbol of a uncomplete group of berserkers, usually one that has lost a member of the group in battle, usually the groupleader, and seek to avenge him. There is also a reference to the god Balders death in this.

As for the number in this case i guess they might have just picked it for fun.

I'm not sure what it's significance is, but it's damn good marketing.

Someone else brought this up too. I really wouldn't worry about that at all - it's not going to change anything. People will still buy poppies, donate to other charities, and observe the silence. Then they will go on with their day, just like everyone else - except now the rest of the day will consist of playing TES:V :) I could maybe understand it being insensitive if this was a particularly gory or somehow irreverent war sim, but it's not.
And I'm with most of the other commentators - it's just a cool, easily remembered date.

Isn't it obvious? Bungie and Betheda are going to merge and become a gaming company owned by 7 Eleven.

The number 11 can represent eyes and since there are 5 11's that means 5 pairs of eyes and on the teaser site there is a group of 5 dragons and a group of 5 people in the mural.

PS. The reason why I came up with 5 is that it was announced on the 11th, it is coming out 11 months from the date of the announcement, and it is coming out on 11-11-11 which means there are 5 11's.

Lady Nerevar posted something interesting about this before: Hortator and Sharmat, one and one, eleven, an inelegant number. Which of the ones is the more important? Could you ever tell if they switched places?

Its a line from Vivic's sermon 11.

If it did have any significance in lore, though, I'd expect it to be lore that connects to the game somehow, and since the game is obviously taking place in Skyrim and not Morrowind, and the Sermons are mostly relevant in Morrowind. Although I suppose there's always a chance that it will have some connecting to the story of the game or any new lore it might introduce. But more likely, I think, it's just Bethesda trying to be clever with the release date, an effect which will be ruined if the game gets delayed.

I'm so glad they chose an easy to remember date as otherwise I would probably forget to buy the game.

At least Bethesda got that date first, otherwise we'd all probably end up buying Call of Duty 37.

oh yeah, nearly forgot ;)

Most RPGS only go up to 10. Elder Scrolls goes up to 11.

The sermons are relevant to everything. That particular line refers to the equality of the King and the Rebel, which could very well play a part in the storyline, especially if it revolves around Alduin.
