Is Tamriel flat?

Post » Sun May 01, 2011 4:16 pm

Just curious, I was looking at the whole map earlier, and I was wondering if it's completely flat, or it's just to show Tamriel like a Robinson Projection?

I'm not a lore buff, just curious.

It said somewhere Nirn or Tamriel is a continent or planet or something, I was confused, and just wondering.

It is an infinite sphere. I know that makes no sense. It is not supposed to.

It is thus, all of these things:

A plane
A planet
A sphere
An infinity.

As above, so below.

Personally, I doubt it. Lots of the world is uncharted; thus, Tamriel's map would be displayed as such. Notice how Atmora and Akavir aren't on the same map.

If the gods' plane(t)s are depicted as round, then Nirn HAS to be, in my eyes.

Just because a map isn't drawn correctly, doesn't mean the whole world's flat. A quote about the 'incorrect' Shadowkey Map:

Well the thing with map making is that the maps are done from the point of view of the cartographer. A resident of Tamriel may not have access to a flight spell to gauge accuracy and certainly would not have access to a satellite photo. So is it really so far fetched to believe that a cartography from that area of Hammerfell would draw his map with inaccuracies? It seems obvious the maps highest function was to point out the most important areas that a traveller to that area would need to take note of.

Besides, the Mages' Guilds in Daggerfall had globes. :P

I'm not sure if Nirn is depicted in the Orrery, but if it is, its spherical.

Nirn is round, and is as infinite as any spherical object is. I do not believe the myths.

Unless there's some ultra-obscure lore stating that the world is flat.... strike that. If there was some lore stating it I'd treat it as religious propaganda or something of the sort. Nirn is round.

Nirn (Ehnofex for 'Arena') is a finite ball of matter and magic made from all of the god planets at the beginning of time,... - http://www.imperial-library.info/obscure_text/cosmology.shtml

Some mage in Tamriel needs to invent an enchanted map that's like a childrens pop-up book. You unravel the map and mountains and cities rise out of the page to give you a better view of the land.

I think he was joking. Technically most maps are flat. The ones that aren't are called globes. We've believed in a round earth for about 2,000 years, and during this long period of time, funky projections were not always used.

I'm pretty sure it's a site that seeks to satirise pseudoscientific belief. They just happen to be very good at keeping their poker face on to get people riled up.

Most globe-maps are flat too, when you think about it. Just paper (or anything like it) strapped onto a "skeleton" or round structure of sorts.
Not that it matters.

Yeah, Nirn could use some padding. Err...

Nirn isn't infinite, it's the other planets that are. Nirn is finite because it's Lorkhan's bundle of joy, and Lorkhan's domain is that of limitations.
