When you don't post in threads in the Lore Forum that have nothing to do with lore.

Oh, crap. :(

Ways to know: When you care about TES belief systems almost as if they were real. Some lore buffs (not I) qualify as TES theologians, complete with memorizing entire texts.

Turd merchant?

Or are you more going with Albides? (I'd say he is more a scholar of Gnostic doctrine myself...)

I wasn't getting that specific, as there have been a number of loremasters. It's true that TES lore is based on gnosticism, various Asian religions, Crowley, and other systems, of course.

Difficult, unless you bring in source materials used to create the same said lore.

Such as, Gnosticism and friends.

I love the gnostic stuff, but my interest in TES preceded all that. When Daggerfall came out I was in the 6th grade and had never touched advlt fantasy or RPGs. I was hooked when I stared at the character creation screen and saw in that alone a whole world full of promise. Since it was the demo that wouldn't let me past the first dungeon, I indulged myself by reading the in-game books. Since I had read reviews saying that the full game was x times the size of Great Britain, I fully expected everything in the books, from mischevious fairies to the Crystal Tower's zoo, to be depicted in the full game. I was disappointed, but the game and the universe stuck with me, long enough that I bought Redguard when I saw it in a second-hand game shop. When Morrowind came out I was old enough to realise that it was a brilliant, original piece of work, a fantastic narrative experiment, and, only gradually, uncovered the occult associations, which I love because not only does it flesh out the world, it's also intellectually appealing in its own right. Alan Moore's Promethea springs to mind as a similar work.

Edited for crunch.

Resurrect him, and kill him again...

You know you're a lore buff when you can explain CHIM in an intellectual manner.

I can, I just choose not to.

when this forum is your main place of residence.

when you can quote books off the top of your head.

when your signature involves either actual lore or quotations that are only funny to other lore-geeks.

when you don't admit that you are one.

When you post in the lore's section to find answers. And read lots of in game books. And have an open mind to thoughts and ideas. And when you realize you don't know everything. So I would say you are already there. :foodndrink:

I've considered myself a lore novice for... a long time, but I'll try to add some-

..when you know more about a character from a game that you've never played (Arena or Daggerfall for example) then someone you know in real life
..when you read through one of MK's posts and actually understand (most) of it
..when you can quote a book without having to go to TIL and look it up
..when you will spend more time reading through long posts in a long thread than you would in another forum

When you've read most of the in game books and call vivec vehk.
Wait...that means I'm a lore buff *Victory Dance*

Heh. I remember a time that I made a post in MW General and said 'Vehk', then someone quoted me and changed it to 'Vivec' as if they thought that they were correcting me.
