If you want to find a quest item quickly in a dungeon, just use the [ or ] key to cycle through the possible locations in the dungeon.
It's best if you only use that as a last resort, though. Once you've been playing for a while and you have a decent amount of dungeon-crawling experience, you'll start to recognize distinct patterns in dungeon layout and be able to locate the quest location in that pattern. For example, have you ever seen that really big room with several walkways going around the outside of it, and at the bottom and in the middle is a big stone platform with a ramp/stairway leading up to it? The platform at the top of that ramp is a quest location, and you'll often find the quest item there. Another example is in the gray-rock caverns, you can keep going down and down until you get to a dead end with three enemies around a campfire. That's a quest location, and the item you're looking for is often there.
Each dungeon has six quest item locations. So do your best to find the item (or enemy) on your own, but if you exhaustively search the place and still haven't found what you're looking for, or if you just feel like getting it quickly, use the [ and ] keys to cycle through and find it.
