Does anyone else giggle

Post » Sun May 01, 2011 11:12 pm

Dunno if this is a spoiler exactly, but just in case I'll put it here.

Does anyone else giggle madly when they pronounce the title of the ashlander tribe's leader?

Ok, so it's the British pronunciation of ash can. Or the Bostonian. I still think it's a widely ignored Easter Egg.

It's not the British pronunciation. I don't know of any dialect of English where the word 'can' is pronounced the same way as 'khan'.

Yeah, but she's a goddess. I'm a Nord (Dunmer/Argonian/etc,) and we pronounce things differently. (Or.... maybe we should all pronounce words exactly like the Queen of England).

In any event, I've seen a number of these "How do you pronounce ....." type topics and, while interesting and sometimes informative, not one of them has caused me to change the way I pronounce a word in my own mind. (And I think giggling can certainly be appropriate).

Honestly, pronouncing it "ash-can" makes me giggle far less than http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRnSnfiUI54.

It was pretty funny mostly because I was expecting the "khan" pronunciation....

Yeah.... well.... you know what?.... she's um...... stupid!

Not sure why ash-cans is so funny though. Khaaaan is funny though.

Because in some parts of the world "ashcan" is the term for trash can. And Khaaan is the correct pronunciation for leader in Mongolian and related languages. (Well, roughly anyway. Closer than "can" anyway.)

I do not giggle while I am in an Ashlander Camp. I am in a state of profound awe and utmost respect. Something about those wooden chimes clanking about.
In fact.....I giggle not at all. I will LOL now and then....but a giggle is simply not in my emotional vocabulary.......just like Ghengis Khan.....and quite possibly James Caan.

heh heh.

Pretty much, but British people don't generally use the word 'pee' anyway, so it makes no difference.

AFAIK this is the way you pronounce http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/cd/GenghisKhan01.ogg. There's no "k" sound in the Khan.

Yeah "kh" should be pronounced like "r", it's more like "ashran".

Which begs the question : how do you pronounce "Khuul" ? More like "cool", or "rule" ?

I have no idea how you're supposed to pronounce it, but I tend to say double vowels like that twice. Comes out as "Kuh-ool" in my brain as a result of some sort of weird habit I have of pronouncing English words vaguely similar to Japanese ones. On an off day it turns into "Ku-uru"...yay Engrish? XD

We should make a list about every name/word in Morrowind that can be pronounced wrong, starting with daedric shrines.

I do not even contemplate trying to pronounce the names of Daedric shrines. I have enough problems trying not to think of half the Dwemer ruins as being named "Neufchatel". Maybe the Dwemer just really liked cheese.

I remember hearing an NPC in Khuul pronounce it as "Kull," it rhymes with "toll."
He said: "Khuul is an unusual stop for tourists. Why are you really here?"

SilentThief, I pronouce that name as "Ah-nis See-loth."

Also, does anyone else pronounce Cyrodill with a hard "c", unlike everyone in Oblivion?
