Playing Morrowind?

Post » Mon May 02, 2011 5:10 am

I got this game about a year ago and I really want to get into it, as the atmosphere and music are amazing but the thing that's killed it for me in the past is all the text, there's way too much. I guess I was spoiled by all the voice acting in Oblivion and FO 3 plus my eyes tend to get strained. I do think that this game is better than Oblivion as it seems to have more soul but I still love Oblivion and class it as one of the best games I've ever played.

Also are there any houses to buy in Morrowind and if not where can I store my gear?

Glad to see you are enjoying Morrowind. :D

I've personally always used http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Ralen_Hlaalo body as a storage device for all of my armor/weapons. As his body never disappears and there is no limit to what you can place *inside* it. And I use his house, Hlaalo manor, which is right across from the Hlaalu council manor in Balmora as my base of operation.

In Morrowind, containers don't reset like in Oblivion. So, you could in theory kill anyone and take there house. Just as a warning Ralen Hlaalo is one of the few characters whose body never disappears. Most will go away so I wouldn't trust placing anything on a body unless it's his. Also, if you work your way up in one of the three great houses, Hlaalu, Redoran, or Telvanni. They will eventually give you a stronghold.

Hope that answers your question!

Thanks for the reply. About containers, does that mean I can store gear in them, without the contents vanishing (containers not bodies)?

You will get used to reading, don't worry about that. I have the same problem every time I go back to my beloved games from the 90s, but as I get caught up in the story the problems disappear. How long does it take for your eyes to strain? take a break once/hour, play on lower resolution (morrowind is old, so it was designed to run on lower resolution then todays standard) as that will make the letters larger etc. And you might think about getting some "computer" glasses (ie reading glasses for reading on computer screens) if this is a common problem for you when sitting long sessions with text on the computer...

Yeah, good tips. I also think there's something wrong in your vision perhaps so that you don't know about it yourself. Do you notice if you often look at your screen sideways or have leaned closer to it when reading something small? Then glasses should work fine. :) Otherwise (and why not anyway) shorter sessions.

In addition to all that's said, there's also a refresh rate for a computer screen. Don't know how much adjusting that might affect. Positively, I guess, if the display isn't visibly flashing all the time, at least... :D Also, my old computer's monitor is blurry in itself - it has some remains of an old screen burned into its tube or something like that... You'd probably notice if this was the case with your display as well though. :P

Really? :E As handy as it is to stuff infinite amounts of loot into any permanent corpse of the game, I'd still feel a bit uncomfortable to live in a house with a dead man laying constantly on the floor... :D

No houses to buy. Some houses you can kill off the owners and take possession of. Or has been mentioned, doing quests for one of the Great Houses will eventually earn you a stronghold of your own. Also if you are playing on a PC, then there are tons of mods that add homes. Other people may make a cave, tomb or dumner fort their home.

As for containers (other than perma bodies) I still would avoid. I still remember the countless threads from over the years about people's stuff disappearing from the outdoor crates and such. I never had that happen to me personally but then again I never stored things in them either. Remember you can always just drop your stuff on the ground, MW people are very nice and never steal your stuff.

Ground is the best, although not so 'neat'. It's strange how people need to organize their stuff, even in a game. Or even at least in a game, even if not in real life... :)

Also, what makes you actually kill the owners of a house you want to settle in? Of course you'll want certain privacy, but couldn't you just live in peace for a change? The other tenant wouldn't steal from you or anything! It's just strange what 'musts' we Morrowind players have, even in so little, completely unnecessary thing as housing. :D

And I haven't had any problems with chests, sacks, crates, barrels, etc. All my stuff have always stayed in those. Though there have been major disappearances, as said. Still, I've always taken a risk and it's not yet backfired. Not guarenteeing anything though...

For some of my characters I found a house I wanted, then Bribed the current resident NPC a load of times and then disabled them through the console to represent buying the house off them. For rp purposes that sits better with me than cold blooded murder and squatting. ;)

There are numerous 'homes' of one sort or another you can get for free, one way or another. You can occupy bandit caves and Velothi towers once you've cleared out the outlaws/monsters living there. If you don't mind spooky surroundings and the occasional otherworldy visitation then an Ancestral Tomb might be your cup of tea. Strongholds, Daedric Ruins and Dwemer Ruins are stylish abodes for adventurers willing to fight for them.

There's a quest in Seyda Neen that will end up leaving a shack unoccupied, and a Fighters Guild quest that leaves a Balmora house empty.

If you check out the UESP wiki you'll find the Abandonned Shack and empty Vivec apartment.

Ahh, houses... well, if you are not going into mods yet, you can occupy just about anywhere that you find convenient enough, as long as there are no important NPCs that you have to kill off first (e.g. do not kill Caius). There are none that you can officially buy, but the main quest, Great Houses, and (if you have Bloodmoon) the East Empire Company will all give you usable houses explicitly. Others will give you opportunities to unofficially inhabit other places (for example, I often claim a particular house in Maar Gan during the Mage's Guild questline). When in doubt, ask UESP; there is an article there devoted specifically to selecting a house that is not specifically given to you, and if you find a place you like with NPCs in it, you can check that NPC's article to see if they are important or not (and thus make the choice of whether or not to remove them).

Also, if the reading all the dialogue is a problem, you can just read the journal updates if you do not have to make choices in the dialogue (though I personally find the dialogue boxes easier on the eyes, the journal entries are typically shorter). If there is blue text, click it. If you do not get a journal update, or you do not need to make a choice, there is a good chance that the dialogue is not highly important. This is also not to mention that, at some point, if you do actually read the rumors/advice/etc., you will eventually know what they are saying just by looking at it for a second or two.

My personal preference is the roof above Caius house in Balmora, and all over the floor of the Scamp merchants place in Caldera.
