The Story of the Nerevarine

Update: I went to uesp.net and found this:

House Indoril is one of the initial seven Great Houses of Morrowind. After being founded during the early part of the First Era, Indoril was one of the strongest Houses with vast political power and many influential positions, due to its close ties to the Tribunal. It was the house of Chimer hero Lord Indoril Nerevar. Duke-Prince Indoril Brindisi Dorom was ruling Mournhold during its destruction by Mehrunes Dagon.

This time of influence came to an abrupt halt at the end of the Second Era. After the Armistice between Lord Vivec and Tiber Septim in 2E 896, many of House Indoril's leading members chose to commit suicide rather than accept the treaty. The Lord High Councilor of the Grand Council, himself an Indoril, rejected the treaty, and refused to step down. He was then assassinated in a plot, and replaced by a Hlaalu noble. Emboldened by the success of their new Imperial allies, House Hlaalu embraced the opportunity to settle some old scores with House Indoril, and a number of local councils and land holdings changed hands in bloody feuds. All these events caused House Indoril to lose power rapidly, and it was left severely weakened during the period of transition to Imperial rule.

The remaining members of House Indoril retreated into positions in the Tribunal Temple hierarchy. The predominately Indoril militant order, the Ordinators, protects Vivec and other Temple and Indoril holdings. Its main resources being tied up in Guard duty and the maintenance of defenses against Dagoth Ur, House Indoril, although not without influence, is far from its former glory.

Currently, House Indoril has no territorial holdings on the island of Vvardenfell. Indoril District occupies the heartland of mainland Morrowind, with lands south of the Inner Sea including the city of Almalexia or Mournhold, and the town of Necrom on the eastern coast with its City of the Dead. Indoril territory borders House Dres and the Deshann Plain.

In the game Oblivion, citizens of Cyrodiil speak of House Indoril being in ruins as the result of machinations of the new king, Hlaalu Helseth, and his House Hlaalu and House Dres allies.

Nice find there Voxxjin, so technically it'd be safe to say that the city of Vivec is an Indoril holding and possibly Ghostgate. I'm thinking pretty much anywhere that has Ordinator influence. Even though it says the house has no holdings on Vvardenfell I'm trying to look at this from the perspective of a player who has completed the main quest and in essence "taking back" his/her rightful territory.

Thanks for the post!

Since my 'find' said that Ordinators protected House Indoral AND temple holdings, I am leaning towards Vivic being a temple territory. Probably a fairly neutral site where all houses could meet. Since all houses supported the Temple, it would reason to me that the capitol of the provence would be at a place all Houses could agree on. House Indoral probably supplied the ordinators as they were the strongest house at that time. Well that's my theory.

I am willing to bet if Bethesda had included the mainland of MW (where we could see house Dres and Indoral homelands) that we would likely see two additional cantons in Vivic, one for each house. But since we were not going to see either of those two houses in the original game they decided not to make cantons for them.

Sorry, i am too lazy to answer your questions because that takes a lot of time but vave you tried reading the ingame books that are mentioned during the MQ?
They will give the different perspectives of the true story about what happened to Nerevar.

Also on the matter of the interest of the Emperor, i tend to think that if he can unsettle the Temple in MW, maybe the nine divines can replace the Temple as the "true" religion. That is why you are sent to fullfill the prophecy.
Maybe he cooperated with Azura?

I like how after a time, the imperial guys slooowly move away from you, and even back to the mainland. Sure, the certain day to uncertain parents was all they needed -- but around the time Nerevarine became immune to disease and death and was given Moon-And-Star, I think the imperials had realised their folly, that there was a decent chance they brought the actual nerevarine to the place where he could help dissolve the empire

Remember, it is never stated defintively that you ARE the nerevarine. Its not important. All that matters is your character was someone who could be the nerevarine. As for Dagoth Ur's dialogue...Well dagoth ur clearly says a lot of weird things.

People seem to be forgetting that mother[censored] Uriel Septim VII ordered your transfer to Vvardenfell - Remember, Uriel Septim, of the Septims, Holy emperors touched by Akatosh the Time God, dragonborn and with powers of prophecy ?
He probably send you there to fulfill the Nerevarine Prophecy - AS FORETOLD IN THE 3rd PROPHECY OF THE ELDER SCROLLS...

So, maybe the average Imperials on Vvardenfel aren't too happy with the whole Nerevarine business, but I think you can be damn sure the Emperor played us just how he wanted us to be played... :ninja:

The one thing I really love with the whole aftermath of the Nerevarine and the Oblivion Prophecies as well to some extent is how the protagonist is tricked, duped, we're totally screwed over by those that claim to help us (Azura I am looking at you!). What the hero do at the time, they(us the players) think are good things(unless you're a lore buff and have figured it out) but actually it's the exact opposit. Had I known that destroying the heart of Lorkhan in the Mw questline would've had such a dramatic impact upon Vvardenfell(literally nuking the island to kingdom come) I would never in my life have done it!

I like the fact that our seemingly heroic actions, in Mw leaves an aftermath of the exact opposit.

I've always thought that Uriel Septim probably set the whole plan in motion because he foresaw that Dagoth Ur was building Akhulakhan. So another giant golem, this one powered by Lorkan's own heart, would be a serious danger to the Empire. If he was also aware that a connection to the Heart was the reason that the Vivec, Sotha Sil and Almalexia were immortal and as powerful as Gods that it wouldn't be a bad idea to nullify their powers either. Compared to ending those dangers a little morale boost to Dunmer patriots wouldn't be a serious problem.

Since the only Temple or Tribunal Opposition that matters is Vivec's -- Sotha Sil is either dead or entirely uninterested in the outside world for centuries by then and Almalexia has reached the "barking at the moon"-crazy stage-- I have two theories. 1. That Vivec was trying to hold onto his power as long as possible, 2. that there had been so many potential Nevarines that he had to wait until one proved him or herself strong enough to challenge Dagoth Ur.

I tend towards the latter theory because he doesn't go out of his way to see that you are persecuted and chased down. Dagoth Ur sends Ash Slaves after you, but Vivec doesn't send Ordinators or Buoyant Armigers to kill you which he could if he wished. The worst you get is being called "scum" and they do that to all Outlanders.

(Of course I could sort of see Almalexia losing it when you realize that her late husband, who she might have murdered, has been reincarnated as a female Khajiit, but, hey, that could happen to anyone, right. :D )
