Personally, I haven't read Altered Carbon yet, but I've heard good things about it. More important is the fact that Crytek is giving the writing to an actual Author, and not say, Dave down in testing to do once he's run through the next bug sweep.
In any case, I'd suggest for ANYONE interested to go and watch this video interview with Richard Morgan, where he talks about Crysis 2 and storytelling in gaming:

I wasn't actually expecting much from the story of Crysis 2, but I'm genuinely interested after watching that interview and from what I've been reading elsewhere. He seems to have a real understanding of what game writing takes (that it's a collaborative effort to create a story that works with everything else in the game, not that the writer simply bashes out the story in isolation).
He also had harsh words for what they did to MW2's storyline, and praise for some other games that I felt had a good integration of narrative into the game, so all in all, I'm actually really interested in what the story's going to be now.
