Model Lighting Problem

Post » Sun May 01, 2011 9:21 pm

So, I made this Halberd from scratch. Everything looks great except for when the model is within the edge of a flickering light. Whole sections of the model flicker in and out instead of it gradually lighting up along it's length so to speak. Each node/piece of the .nif does this. In complete darkness or normal lighting it 'shades' just fine. Hopefully this .gif will show what I'm talking about better, as I'm sure I'm not explaining this correctly.

Anyway, how can I fix this? And is there something specific I did when creating the model or textures that would've caused this?

This may just be a shot in the dark, but it might be that you have doubles of some of your faces. If you extruded a vertex loop a couple of times without realizing it, you may have a few faces (or sections) that double up, but occupy the same space. So, with slight movements, like in a character's idle animation, it might be possible that the different sections of double faces are catching the light and showing up funny. It's just a guess though. You may want to go back into your modeling program, select all of the vertecies, and remove any doubles.

Edit: Afterwards, make sure that the normals are all facing out again, since if you have double faces, it's very likely that they have different normals.

pretty good shot in the dark imo :D.

if thats not it you will probably have to upload the nif so someone can actually see its pink bits.

Well, I went back into Blender and removed any doubles. Still doing whats shown above though :(

Are either of you two willing to take a look at it?

just to link error to cause and fix. I'm guessing now that I've seen the nif. it was due to the gloss setting in the nimaterialproperty being either 0 or a miniscul number like 0.02. also you can only have one bhk block in the the nif iirc. everything has to be a subobject of one node.
