Roleplaying Valen Dreth?

Post » Sun May 01, 2011 6:27 pm

Some days ago I found this opportunity to make oneself look like a NPC and I wanted to try this out. So I thought about which NPC I could be but I didn't really find one. First I wanted to play as Lucien Lachance or Vicente Valtieri, but I thought it would be unrealistic because 1. They are already high-ranked in DB 2. Vicente is my contractee and it would be very silly to get missions from him 3. Lucien is speaker and you can't roleplay a speaker of the black hand because you are speaker only for a few ingame-minutes 4. When Lucien is killed its very weird.

So I thought alot about which character could be interesting but is not already to far integrated in quests. First I thought about the Adoring Fan, but this was a little bit to weird :D
But then I came up with actually Valen Dreth. I know hes a jerk but I think it could be quite interesting from a roleplaying perspective. Pretending that the emperor does go into Dreth's Cell instead of the cell of the player.

What do you think?

Well if you would play as Lucien but named it like Lucius Lechance or something then you might be his twin brother. It's not a bad idea IMO.

I have never actually liked him but if it's fun to you then RP him. Maybe you should consider RP'ing Shady Sam? Travelling through Cyrodill making shady deals could be interesting. All you have to do is kill the real Sam, steal his clothes and start selling some shady stuff (of course you can still join DB or TG).

I think it's a brilliant idea. That instead of you being in the right cell, Valen Dreth was. Although we know he's a wimp in combat, he still might be fun to play as.

Also a good idea. I will think about it.

Thank you. What skills would you suggest for him? I'm pretty unsure.

Interesting twist. You are really Valen Dreth and the one on the opposite cell was the player and he's mocking you because he's jealous.

Valen Dreth is a level 1 Pilgrim class npc with very low health, 16, iirc. So, Armorer, Blunt, Block, Light Armor, Security, Mercantile and Speech.

He's a Pilgrim? I don't know if that's really fitting ...

Says so on his http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Valen_Dreth.

He's incredibly weak as you can see. I think it may be a good idea to stock up on Shield spells..

Off Topic: Isn't it cool how the first person you ever see in both Elder Scrolls III and IV are Dark Elves? :P

Imagine how much Oblivion would be different if Valen escaped instead of you. You would have never became the Champion of Cyrodiil. Perhaps the MQ would be tracking down Valen Dreth and killing him for ruining your life.

To make a speculation; I doubt you would instead have to chase down Dreth, as he might be now an honored hero, for retrieving the amulet and what-not, but that's assuming he doesn't just chuck it into the lake the second he steps out the sewer. He's been imprisoned for years, he's obviously incredibly racist, and doesn't strike me as the patriotic or honorable type. I think he would probably just try and go back to Morrowind. If he choses to actually go with the MQ he would probably drop dead from heart failure when he sees the Oblivion gate.

I think your quest would be to go and pick up where Dreth left off, if he decides to go with MQ, and find the amulet at the bottom of the lake, and start after you've served your sentence if he didn't.

Sounds like a brilliant idea! I did this with Tadrose Helas and had a ton of fun. I used Valen Dreth in my fan fic recently. He plays the villain in http://chorrol.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=4431&st=380#, which shows how he ended up in prison. He believed that the protagonist of my fic (Teresa, then an eight year old girl), was a Witch who had cursed him to always lose when he bet in the Arena. So he decided to kill her to break the spell. He was a complete sociopath with a tenuous grip on reality. Yet he could usually straighten up and pretend otherwise when around authority figures (as he was not completely nuts, he knew that if he openly murdered people the legion would either kill him or lock him up). He was also very fast and good with a knife.

Juib went on to sainthood, drove out the cliff racers and sadly got eaten by daedra during the oblivion crises

VD went on to pissing the wrong people off and getting an early release from this mortal coil

Valen Dreth isn't racist! He's an equal-opportunity hater. All we really know about him is that he enjoys talking trash, he's been in jail for awhile but his sentence is almost up and there's at least one person out there that wants him dead, and is willing to pay for it. I'd guess he left Morrowind in the first place because it was too hot for him there. He might not mind O Gates that much. He can take the heat and he knows who wants him dead in there and there's no guards around to prevent him from killing them first.

With 16 health, he ain't got the power to kill a Mudcrab. He can talk-the-talk, but not walk-the-walk.
