Oblivion crashes--delete temporary files?

Hey! I still have my original Oblivion discs. I had considered getting it again on Steam, as I have a few games on it, and maybe I will later on since my DVD ROM doesn't seem to like the main disc. Anyway, that's not the issue...

Oblivion crashes sometimes, when moving from cell to cell (especially in the wilderness areas). This has always been an issue for me, no matter what computer I play it on. But the last time I played this game, I ran across a helpful hint telling how to delete temporary files the game uses (a cache, or something). Because these files sometimes get corrupted and the game needs to make a new cache. But I forgot how to do it. I don't know where these files are stored, but I remember "Application Data" being in there somewhere. I have tried to search for this article, but I just can't find it. Everyone seems to be playing this on Steam now, so I either come upon a post about Steam, or the XBOX. Anybody how any clue what I'm talking about? Can you help me?

I've never heard of such temporary files, but large saves can accumulate something called 'bloat'. Basically all of the excess memory that's kept around; bodies, moved store items, etc. This only becomes a problem in very late games though, like level 30+. What exactly are your specs? I've had a a regular disk copy for years, and never experienced problems related to temp files.
